it depends. what is the design for? ^^

if it's something symmetrical, make use of the mirror tool.
start blocking out simple shapes (stones, bricks, raised areas etc.), then refine using the thinner brush settings.
always save and check! you can go back and edit as much as you'd like. adding more to the path design is easy, but taking away is harder.
