No, you start from the beginning. However, you'll get some amount of boost to your speed, if you'd got at least one of the event badges from your previous revent runs.

1. They've got 6 exploration events in total, of which 4 are already released and one is in beta. They've received a lot of request from players to make the events recur sooner, so that there's something to do in the game while waiting for newer events. So, most of the "so many things happening" currently are the event reruns.
2. Since Halloween is coming, they've got the new Halloween related "Ghost Dodo hunt" event, which is like a fun side quest.
