Yes, it's a trade off when you don't have a lot of badges / can't invest much time.
Either start early and complete the event while saying bye to the good rewards from the leaderboard, or start late to get better rewards while not completing the event.
When you have more badges, it's less a tradeoff and more a gamble of how late you can start while still completing the event
