Linux life

#

Biggest reason I'm not switching to linux is lack of software I need

#

Good video player is big one, I use potplayer on windows. Sure vlc works and plays the files, but I want some playlist features that potplayer has, and also my favourite, completely customizable hotkeys for almost any action you can do manually

#

Yeah there are options if you just want something that works

#

But back to players, if I was starting now I would probably use musicbee, it does so much things out of the box right compared to foobar where you really need to set everything up yourself pretty much. Though I am bit of a tinkerer so who knows if it could satisfy all my needs

#

Speaking of ugly, I can't update my foobar to a newer version which would be all black because my playlist plugin I've been using all these years is broken on that, so I'm stuck with the old school style white window borders on it

#

Looks nice

#

Sounds a bit tedious

#

One thing musicbee couldn't do is fit into vertical monitor how I would like, there was some sidebar thing that you couldn't get rid of which is bad when horizontal space is limited

#

Bit blurry because I currently have 4k monitor as main and I use scaling, and foobar doesn't behave well with scaling if it's not on the main monitor. But basically I just want lots of space to see the songs in queue

#

Looks pretty ugly because on this older version you can't do anything about those white borders, but I need my playlists more than a pretty player

#

I mostly use them for kpop because albums are not consistent through or even good

#

But also to weed out some albums or songs I really don't care about from otherwise good discography so I can just press play when I want to

#

Yeah

#

But even if all songs are good, they often have very different moods. Like for the day I usually like some blasting, but for night driving something more chill might work better sometimes

solar canopy
#

The archivist in me doesn't allow that

#

Sometimes there are good bonus songs though that just didn't make it to the standard cd

#

Yeah, live versions on standard cd doesn't really work as bonus. I guess it could be cool if it's your favourite song or something, but I don't think they even select exceptional performances or anything, just toss some in there and call it special edition

#

Indeed, same brain

solar canopy
#

Exactly my experience as well when I tried it

solar canopy
#

Yeah. So much is just preference, there is not really one correct way, as much as some people in the interwebs would like to argue about it

solar canopy
#

Yeah it can be a never ending cycle, if it already sounds good I wouldn't touch anything. I posted this before but my eq looks like this, nothing super drastic, biggest change is just 3db because the 200hz-ish range is too pronounced on these imo

#

I use equalizer apo, which is great because you can load vst plugins in it so I just use reaper's eq. You could use pro-q as well but sometimes it wouldn't load the settings on that on boot I had to manually set it off/on every time. Not sure about your options on linux tho

#

But to me 770's sound great out of the box anyway so I don't feel the need to tweak them

#

I actually hate I even feel the need to eq these, I would much prefer if out of the box sound was great

#

Like with helix I had to make impulse response out of my eq curve to put at the end of the chain on every preset because there is no other way to match it so I can play without delay

solar canopy
#

It is yeah, transferring the eq between devices is the biggest problem with it

Don't know if this the correct place to ask but I'm looking for a piece of equipment.

#

An audio inteface that has a compression, noise gate function

#

but I think the gear I should be looking should be a mixer instead of an audio interface, maybe you guys know something ShionThink

solar canopy
# warm girder An audio inteface that has a compression, noise gate function

Doesn't have noise gate but yamaha AG03/06 has compressor and eq for the mic input. Something like rode's rodecaster lineup might have gate and compressor, or maybe some other podcast focused thing, interfaces don't usually pack that much features themselves. I'm also assuming you want it on the mic input since you didn't specify

warm girder
#

the size is good but goddang the price on that lol

solar canopy
#

I have AG06 myself

warm girder
#

yea never seen one with those features, was hoping there was one

#

rn im using the usb mode of the samson q2u,

#

was thinking of upgrade to the setup with an audio interface or a mixer

solar canopy
#

The software for it looks like this, you don't need the software running all the time as it saves the settings on the unit

warm girder
#

yea before i keep swapping my headphones every 2 years or so

solar canopy
#

Oh yeah what's your budget, that's kinda relevant

warm girder
#

then i switched to chi-fi iems and samson q2u like in 2021, never looked back chuukekhide

#

somewhere around 100usd i guess, i already found an alternative. behringer xenys 502s

#

it only has eq but its somewhere around that price point

#

my ear rn is pretty much molded to the iems chuukekhide

#

first few months was brutal to my ears

solar canopy
#

My right ear in so weirdly shaped everything just falls out of it, even my custom molded plugs don't hold super well

warm girder
solar canopy
#

Aye

solar canopy
#

Oh damn it seems way more expensive in freedom land

warm girder
solar canopy
#

Yeah behringer is a bit hit and miss, some products are great, and many times I've heard from friends that they will never buy behringer again after their experience

warm girder
solar canopy
#

Ah you said usd so I made assumptions. Does thomann ship/have good pricing in your country?

warm girder
#

i think they do a 50€ flat fee SeoahSad

solar canopy
#

Oh damn

solar canopy
#

@warm girder Not sure if it's any good but from quick look seems like focusrite vocaster one has eq and compressor and it's only 45€ here at least

warm girder
#

hmm sounds too good to be true monkaHmm

#

i think you missed a single digit chuukekhide

solar canopy
#

Idk why the website says its that expensive

warm girder
#

it does look good tho since its a focusrite

#

that looks like a steal for you rn lol

#

buy one and resell? haseulthinksmirk

solar canopy
#

Huh, seems like it's just really cheap in europe for some reason

#

Hmm, looks like it's just thomann

#

@warm girder I mean this is pretty decent at this price for you too even if the shipping to you is 50€ from thomann

#

Assuming it's any good, I haven't watched anything but focusrite is generally been decent on the consumer side too

warm girder
#

i checked the vocaster price in thomann, it's 42$ wtf, with 60$ shipping fee then its kinda good

solar canopy
#

Curious thing since this doesn't seem standard pricing elsewhere than thomann

#

Even thomann it doesn't read like it's a special deal or anything

warm girder
#

im looking some other brands like maono but idt maono is popular brand

warm girder
solar canopy
#

It's $250 with the mic and headphones set elsewhere

#

Elsewhere being sweetwater, guitar center almost all listings on reverb

#

Worse that can happen is they send you email saying the pricing was an error I guess

People claim there's some difference with higher fidelity audio sources if played through discrete gear and I don't know how much of that is true, but there's an obvious price bracket for audio stuff ranging from speakers to headphones so you have to take their word for it that there is an apparent difference

#

But this is true in most accounts

solar canopy
#

Biggest variable in all of this is when people talk about lossy formats, it never means just one thing, and bitrate is really what makes all the difference. Of course 128 kbps mp3's compared to lossless are very noticeable, where as with 320 kbps mp3's it's getting hard enough to distinguish that you actually need solid setup to even notice the difference. And 320 kbps mp3 is far from the best lossy format.

undone swallow
#

MP3 320k CBR has been the bar for a while because it's transparent, and because everything supports MP3; and not because it's particularly the best option available in any other front

#

game developers for instance struggle with mp3 because there's a small amount of silence placed at the beginning of all audio tracks for some reason, so they have to use Vorbis or Opus instead

#

AAC is really popular but you cannot really convert to good quality AAC yourself unless you have iTunes do it

#

It's not the best codec

solar canopy
#

This is the real problem. I just bought yet another 4tb ssd for my music alone

#

Well I actually bought the ssd for my reaper projects but as a consequence the other 4tb ssd got dedicated to music

#

I gotta built the nas soon, it's getting pretty messy with so many drives

#

Also I don't like the drive letter/drive order, but I can't bother to change it because everything is dependent on the drive letters

#

Yeah games and movies eat the most. Music as well of course, along with reaper projects and related plugins

i shouldve known this was here the whole time

#

#

i started doing this a while ago lol and its rly fun, i realized i could just seperate instrumentals by the stem lines and chop them up to reproduce the tracks lol

fringe laurel
#

I take transparent lossy format any day

fringe laurel
#

@undone swallow 2 of these will do the trick

#

Place it semiperpendicular to your speakers behind

undone swallow
#

This thing has like four angles

#

Perpendicular to the diagonal between the walls?

#

or perpendicular to one wall?

fringe laurel
#

Well, yes the corners of the walls

#

But the y-height is what matters here

undone swallow
#

same height to the speakers?

fringe laurel
#

Yep

undone swallow
#

And the corners behind

fringe laurel
#

Well this is the more utilitarian method

undone swallow
#

Yeah I've seen online that you have to do all corners and to the ceiling

#

floor to ceiling i mean

fringe laurel
#

The more "mathy" method is to just use the 2x4 thick ass acoustic panels and actually calculate your speaker reflections points relative to your listening position

#

Now THAT'S gonna help your speakers give out the flat response without messing so much in SoundID/REW

#

But that requires at least 4 of those acoustic panels

fringe laurel
#

There's a specific calculations on how much panels you actully need based on Sabine and Harman

undone swallow
#

I started hanging those woolly-like blankets in my walls but never finished

fringe laurel
#

kek

#

You're gonna kill your highs if you overdo it

undone swallow
#

do you think if i hang one on the corner diagonally it'll absorb the bass?

fringe laurel
#

Acoustics apparently very appreciate symmetry

undone swallow
#

So I do both corners then

fringe laurel
#

Yep

undone swallow
#

I have a closet on the other side. I'll save up for the diagonal panels instead

#

Does it matter which glue i use?

fringe laurel
#

nope

#

Weld it to the wall for all I care

undone swallow
#

I don't think the foam will survive that. Point taken tho

fringe laurel
undone swallow
#

At that point i'm not 100% sure my room will survive

fringe laurel
#

US?

undone swallow
#

Or the house

fringe laurel
#

yeah don't

#

Kek

#

Wood is a good fuel

undone swallow
#

It's adobe

#

ik everyone hates Adobe but it is cheap

fringe laurel
#

Point is sound hits hard stuff, reflects

#

Sound hit soft stuff, absorbs

#

What sets high, mids and low absorbers apart is the make of the panels

undone swallow
#

adobe needs to be like 1m thick to stop sound from going through. i don't have that privilege

fringe laurel
#

Thicker panels absorbs low

undone swallow
#

Bass I assume are most affected by room corners

fringe laurel
#

Acoustics =/= noise blocking

undone swallow
#

i know

#

lol

#

i just wish i could feel privacy in this room. bleh

fringe laurel
#

Yeah A LOT people confuses soundproofing with "reducing reverb"

#

Like

#

a lot

#

Much more that I am in the industry

undone swallow
#

I know you can buy vinyl curtains to block noise leaking but I don't know where you can do that over here

#

Whatever

fringe laurel
#

Not complicated at all

undone swallow
#

To be clear, the bass traps are meant to be on the corners behind the speakers, right?

fringe laurel
#

Yep

#

But again, the utilitarian way

undone swallow
#

What's the non-utilitarian way?

fringe laurel
#

The "real" way is to calculate the literal position of the panels

#

Relative to speaker and listening position

#

and that takes AT LEAST 4 panels

undone swallow
#

What if i just do the whole corner?

fringe laurel
#

It'll alleviate the obvious low frequency waves

#

So you have more headroom for your room EQ

undone swallow
#

Are those bass traps for three wall corners any good?

fringe laurel
#

Don't know

undone swallow
#

two walls and ceiling/floor i mean

fringe laurel
#

I haven't encountered three corner walls

#

Oh

#

Can't really say, I haven't quoted to client those kind of products

undone swallow
#

Hm

#

So what do you put in the ceiling corners?

fringe laurel
#

But my way of covering floors and ceiling is to use carpets

undone swallow
#

Hm. I have no idea how much is a carpet

fringe laurel
#

Because the absorption I already got from panels behind my speakers is already great, helps that I treat the room FIRST then I care about speakers second

#

Meaning I get the room's RT60 value already in the range that I want

#

And then I proceed with speaker placements

fringe laurel
undone swallow
#

I see

fringe laurel
#

Thick enough carpets helps with diffusion and mid-high absorption

#

So literally go to IKEA

#

Lie down onto the carpets until you found one you can doze on

#

That's a perfect one

solar canopy
#

Best strategy is having a cottage in the forest with really thin wood walls so the bass frequencies just fuck off into the woods

fringe laurel
#

LMAO

#

You might attract bears

and it's only on vocals depending on what microphone i use

#

when i record vocals if i wanted a cleaner sound i would figure out the perfect distance so it wouldn't clip. i had a project i finished where i meticulously had to get 2 vocalists to stand at a certain distance from the mic on certain parts of the song

fringe laurel
#

also that's a fake Yamaha desk if I ever saw one

Try getting into Behringer

fringe laurel

Just that I wouldn't have faith on products that I put out from that

#

Not that I am implying it's horrible

valid garden
fringe laurel
#

Before that I want to know why a desk/mixer instead of audio interface

#

That looks like it's eating up desk real estate

valid garden
fringe laurel
#

I wouldn't call that "V8 Souncard" an interface in any stretch

#

eventho it technically operate as one

#

Abysmal quality for anything beyond 80Hz and 15kHz

#

Plus.... no proper preamps

#

Just a "here's some volts, now go loud"

#

Completely disregarding any gain or limiter system

valid garden
fringe laurel
#

I'd advocate this to literally everyone

#

Yes, you can compensate

#

But only up to a point

#

I almost certain you can save up for a Behringer UMC22

valid garden
fringe laurel
#

and throw out that mixer and V8

#

Also, comforter hanging onto wall >> egg cartons

valid garden
#

i also don't like the unnecessary noise gate on the V8. it only happens once i plug in a 1/4" jack

fringe laurel
#

#

More reasons to just dunk it into the trash

valid garden
#

do you guys prefer recording with a DI box or go direct?

#

bc i remember seeing a connor sweeney (ex-loathe) vid that he records with it iirc

fringe laurel
#

It's a "you gotta have it"

#

and in the theoretical sense I get why

#

At all times, you would want balanced signal coming through your PA/interface

#

Less issues to deal with, when issues pop up

#

Just that functional (not decent) DI boxes are stupid cheap

#

Like this is 50 dollars and session PA vendors use this

#

If it works for them (PA vendors, usually small to medium venues) it 100% works for you

#

Since they're more picky on what they can plug in

#

Dealing with SPLs greater than 100dB they need to get the good stuff so when they want to stage the sound it's saving them time taken for whatever mixing and tuning they need to do on the main desk

#

25 dollars, also seen used in fields too

coral iron
#

Guys is 21 too old

#

for making music

fringe laurel
#

I am probably in a bubble

#

But kinda baffling me right now that 80% of the amateur musicians I come across in my gigs/studio have never heard of "balanced audio"

#

Amateur here means quite a big scope;

#

Musical students, solo buskers, part time instrumentalist

#

Like they see this and say "yo I've seen that but what's that for"

undone swallow
#

i have heard about balanced audio but that's because i have a DAC and a pair of monitor speakers with balanced out and in

#

otherwise, i've never even used it

fringe laurel
#

Yeah you know that because you rock a discrete audio player

undone swallow
#

just my pc

fringe laurel
#

DAC is a discrete audio playback device

undone swallow
#

ah, i see

#

it also has dsd, it's an iFi Zen DAC first gen

fringe laurel
#

I am talking about just the general keyboard player

#

or that acoustic guitar busker just across two streets

undone swallow
#

yeahhhh hardly a reason to use balanced in those cases tbh

fringe laurel
#

Well unless you're on stage

undone swallow
#

yeah exactly

fringe laurel
#

But u right

undone swallow
#

however i also find it less likely that the musician on stage actually knows what balanced is for. if anything they'd dumb it down to "it sounds better on stage" for themselves

unless they actually manage the gear they have no reason to learn

undone swallow
#

i do match my releases to musicbrainz specifically because

  • it's more accurate (even if i have to do it myself)
  • my music player can then tell apart different releases inside a release group like: different editions of an album, different editions/volumes of a single, singles that are the title track (as in, they have the same name as the album, rather than kpop "title tracks")
  • i can scrobble to listenbrainz. i hate last.fm and this way i can rename albums and tracks and it doesn't screw up scrobbling

that said, i do feel guilty when i'm too lazy to tag an album and end up playing the files on a different, more basic music player. that's the one side effect. but that might be just me being too obsessive. maybe.

#

also, album count according to myMPD: 2,858 albums (playtime: 88 days 22 hours)

#

it seems it annoys every kpop/japanese music user because those releases tend to be left behind and often i arrive having to add the tags

#

maybe navidrome has a function to group albums by folder?

#

yeahhhhh but blacklisting artists is a struggle to bring from player to player

#

you can use myMPD for a web browser accessible client. the web playback is actually optional and so are the musicbrainz tags

#

If you use MusicBrainz Picard it can find all your releases on MusicBrainz!!!!!! anyways if you keep your files in your left pane you can work on your files locally, and one cool feature (for either panel) is the script taggers

You could make a script that finds and replaces your tags, so you could translate them. It could also make them multivalue tags if you wish

#

You can keep track of all the genre translations in the script itself too

#

It's similar to the scripting foobar2000 uses

#

titleformat

#

So it's easy enough to learn

#

i mean more you should disable autotagging completely. instead go to the website and drag links into the right pane, or paste them into the top search bar to load that release

#

it's worth it to make scripts depending on how far you push your customizations to your library tags

#

but you can also... do it manually. you don't actually need the website

undone swallow
#

for kpop stuff i choose a release that is set as country south korea or worldwide and that is set as digital download

assuming it's a qobuz download

#

for cd releases i try to figure out whether either barcode or catno. are included

#

in fact for cd releases on slsk i usually download releases that have barcode or catno. on the folder name or included rips

#

otherwise i tag with another release and then in the panel below i remove the release id and track id tags, and any tags that identify which specific release it is

#

you're not always gonna match to the exact release but you don't have to use all tags

#

for those cases you can even fill it with garbage data so you know you don't know the release later on

#

i missed my subway stop. fuck. going back.

undone swallow
#

well, you don't actually need picard to fill in the tags

to tell you the truth, sometimes it removes the tags

#

for most use cases you only really "need" picard to standardise artist, album and track names

#

so if you tag manually, then the only use case you would really have is... use of scripts

Got theory people here?

#

Would you note this II v I iv?

#

At least that's how I hear it

#

I don't think it's #II for the first one cause I am considering the root E

#

And F is bII of E

#

watch I be completely wrong

fringe laurel
#

C#?

fringe laurel
#

Oh whoa you think the A is the I

#

We hear differently I guess

#

eh?

#

Isn't it A for the last chord?

#

Just chorus

#

Because I hear F# B E A

#

Fair

#

I most definitely think it's the roots because the bass notes are those ones

#

But that is purely because those are the most dominant ones that I hear

#

LMAO

#

Interesting

#

I know that the bass notes in a song isn't always the root

#

Just hummed it

#

Nope

#

You're probably hearing the vocals

#

Which does makes sense
