Overlay's have been mostly useless since Steam first added theirs.
I've had Discords off for almost 4 years now.

I'd honestly just suggest disabling them on everything if you're having problems.

Hey all, what gearsets are worth going for? Currently have a set of strikers and bulwark.

almost all the gearsets have some viable layouts that can give some variety, only really rigger and aces dont find much use, all the others are either effective sets that have good builds, or have their niches

for some of the others good ones alongside striker that is currently very high in dmg output,
negotiators is a good other weapon build, that is based on spread dmg,
eclipse is the defacto cc that can either go full cc with foam or less cc with fire but gains dmg,
hunters fury is good for run and gun smg or shotty builds,
hardwired makes for a good seeker build,
tip of the spear and hotshot make good HH builds
future initiative is the healer set, either full heal or in red for group buffs
and red ongoing or red patriots are other good group buff builds

all of those also have written guides to how to put them together in #td2-build-advice , in the pinned spreadsheet there

weapon damage in general is weaker than the other stats you mentioned. HF is very often run with ARs and pistols for example because the set is strong. heartbreaker's kind of a mid range bruiser set and ARs are perfect for that but doesn't stop you using whatever you find fun!

coyotes has the benefit of a group buff. but its strength varies on how you play - close or long range

and you would have to build around that style of play to get the most out of it if you're solo, too
