Ozvard (a SN developer) already stated that something significant has changed in the lore to allow for a seventh kid class to be added. Up until recently, there were no plans to add a new kid. This means changing the SN lore to permit Nicky as a playable character is very plausible.

Nicky being the kid they supposedly rescue doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the game's existence. Changing the lore would be changing the game's "purpose for existence". They can easily change when SN takes place in lore and switch Nicky out with Aaron or even an anonymous friend of their's.
