AS in IT, got a job at a local school and unintentially rebuilt their department, went part time there and currently reinrolled with WGU in their BA cybersec program. Im piecing together a home lab and using some of my work skills to prop up a proxmox env with a windows AD I can start messing around with breaking into. So after all is said and done I will have experience in my chosen field, a Bachlors to appease HR departments, and projects under my belt along with a varienty of certs from Comptia and ICS. Im working with HTB in my limited freetime to get a jump start on pentesting skills and to get my CISSP and PNPT. from there I will be looking for Purple team roles I can fit into.

Your journey sounds amazing and i wish you the best :) mine's just beginning but i dipped my toes in hardware pentesting when i started learning about insecure protocols in nfc, rfid, RF and more and then got into lockpicking a lil so i covered physical pentesting. i then did a few pentesting courses like the PEH learnt a few languages and went back to RF with the HackRF. Now ima try work more on physical while trying software pentesting as as of now i'm only proficient enough to pwn easy boxes without walkthroughs as my methodology continues developing. hope to get pnpt/oscp/maybe? cpts soon :)

phones are not black magic, it is 100% possible to analyze their network traffic and other activities

thats why google and other companies have been actually caught doing creepy shit and why games are cracked no matter what publishers do, its impossible to create software that the computer can run but someone cant reverse engineer

if everyone was already hacked then even if just 0.01% of people were looking into it, it'd be caught immediately

thats why companies like NSO Group are secretive about their exploits and customers use it to target specific people

we also know that there have been significant amounts of time where NSO Group's exploits were 1-click instead of 0-click or they didnt have exploits, it takes a while to create them

and phones like the google pixel have fairly good hardware security through the tensor chip, memory tagging, etc

for usability android only applies a lot of these hardening measures to a few system apps and apps that opt into it but there's GrapheneOS that uses memory tagging for everything, and the hardened memory allocator

and almost all of these zero-click zero-day exploits are memory corruption so hardening against memory exploitation is insanely effective

and of course there is still a lot that needs to be done, a lot more code that handles attacker-controlled input needs to be sandboxed and written in memory safe languages but people throw a tantrum at the mention of rust so that doesnt ever happen

and keep in mind, citizen lab, amnesty international's tech lab, etc are very often able to confirm that a device was infected with pegasus/similar spyware by analyzing it

so of course they could detect if its happening to every device

of course if you mean that like high risk users should assume every device could be compromised then yes thats fair and people who have high security requirements should absolutely be working on hardening their devices but this ridiculous FUD like "everything can be hacked no matter what you do and youre being watched right now" just leads to people being less secure

because yes there ARE vulnerabilities in all devices thats just inevitable with how complex the codebase is but that doesnt mean everyone will be affected or that the vulnerabilities cant be hardened against

theres a lot that can be done, like sandboxing, reducing attack surface, etc

just look at qubesos for an example of this, the OS is very light and as long as you separate the qubes correctly, its very unlikely that there is an exploit that could lead to one affecting another
