remasters are the same thing and shouldn't really be counted as they contain little differences to the original (even so far as only basic qol or just a graphics touchup)
but imo remakes are fair game, they can have almost as little in common with the original as 'same characters in same place'. as long as the thing it's being nominated for is something new, it's fair game imo. you can get sequels that are more similar to the first game than some remakes

yeah it's quite a something in that regard. Thankfully in my playthrough I kind of ruined the war-economy so I wasn't as immersed how bad things were, but still quite felt it.
But that's more of a me thing and problem how I go about resources in these games.

3:FES probably a good start, there are some QoL changes in the sequels that might make it hard to go back to the older games

- the 2011 Shadow Warrior remake (it's cheesy as hell, might have some raunchy jokes but BOI is it ever fun)
- there's always Payday 1 and 2 (though they're a bit hard to get into nowadays)
- going by shadow's definition of an FPS we could throw in all system shocks and deus ex games here (though - like i said - they're immersive sims, not straight up FPS games)
- F.E.A.R. fits those tight criteria too, in a way
- you can always try the OG Painkiller from 2004
- or OG Prey from 2006
and those are just games from my steam list that might have things that could interest you
not to mention big piles of mods and such

id understand why you might think fallout 4 is the worst game in the series, but its totally unfair to say the fps oriented gameplay ithat brought better gameplay to the previous ones as weakness of the games. Even story wise, ill take fallout 4 rather than 3 any day. There's a reason why people are remaking fnv in fallout 4 engine since its truly a much needed improvement on the gameplay system

while i agree that combat is... marginally better in fallout 4, it doesn't change the fact that it's just one small aspect of a greater set of interlocking mechanics
the only reason people are porting new vegas to fallout 4 is because the all the other aspects of new vegas are simply... better
from the writing, through atmosphere, quests, dialogues (and systems related to it like skill checks) and all the other rpg mechanics
so the goal of porting that to f4 is to improve the one lackluster element - the combat
while doing it the other way around - somehow cramming f4 into nv is not feasible at all - because it wouldn't improve the awful story, boring characters, lackluster skills and that god awful dialogue system
without just... rewriting the whole thing from scratch
which is beyond the scope of any modding team
