There's legitimate criticism to be had with how seraphine was handled but i personally think a lot of it was blown way out of proportion because being on the hate train was the cool trendy thing to do at the time. once kda event ended you didn't really hear a peep from any of the people being most vocal about it
even people that were super gungho about skarner abruptly disappeared as soon as the relevancy was over. it's almost like they didn't actually care and were just jumping on the bandwagon

Going through Echoes: Shadows of Valentia right now and it's also really fun.
Though this is a good guide on where to start playing. I started with Fire Emblem 7, but I think Awakening would have been a better introduction.

Oxenfree is not that scary. I played through the whole thing with no problem and I'm quite averse to horror stuff.
It just have some supernatural phenomenons is all.
