God it's been a while since I've played something as confusing in existence as A New Frontier, is it a family drama about Javier's family, is it just a cheap way to bring people up to speed with Clementine shenanigans past S2, is it a weird attempt to connect a bit further to comics? It has both Clem as background character and one of the most important ones which basically account for who lives or dies in your family, it has some awfully dumb and forced story moments and genuine good relationship building at the same time, what a bizzare game

they are all pretty balanced (except for watcher, that one is fr op with the cards you can get)

If i were to rank them personally on ease of use

Ive tried sevwral variants of orbs decks, ive tried highly recursive claw decks with draw and tutors, ive tried always choosing the strongest card in a vacuum decks, etc.

I just end up taking too much damage

Cant get enough ice early on, then cant get my combo piecea late

The way i play defect is i prioritize upgrading Zap or any of the orb channel. Ice orb is low prio on my rotation because my playstyle is “I wont take dmg if the enemy is dead”

Yeah the orb mechanic is definitely a learning curve, because of how different it is from other characters

Yeah tbh I totally get why defect plays like ass. Balancing the orbs takes some time to get used to but there’s really no reason to just play what characters you want

I think of orbs as a passive swiss army knife. You dont have to build around it and just let it be a passive source of dmg/block

Having an extra source of dmg can help even if you dont interact with the mechanics and just build defect like a weird silent 😆

i had to put my beer down for this

mild spoilers for half life 2 episode 1 and half life alyx, obviously

in episode 1 there's a bit where you're trying to get away from the citadel and you get on a train and alyx gets it going
and soon after you realize - it's a cargo train full of stalker pods
you remember stalkers, right? those completely deformed husks of human beings reduced to nothing more than worker drones that constantly scream in pain

anyways - it's a train in a videogame so of course it crashes with both of you inside and alyx gets trapped under one of those pods and there's that stalker screaming right in her face and you gotta get your gravity gun and get that pod off her
and it's a proper horror scene - there's lots of screaming and tension
it's genuinely nerve wracking

so you do that and instead of getting the gun out and being this stereotypical videogame badass she just... seizes up in complete fear

and when you get out of that train instead of switching into this token npc sidekick mode the game lets you to just stay there for a moment and catch a breath
it's a great and often overlooked piece of character building
a genuinely human moment

on the other side - there's HLA and the jeff chapter
where this theoretically younger and less battle-hardened alyx goes through an even more mortifying event - the whole jeff thing

and seconds after she kills him she throws this cheesy "ehmergerd jeff - are you okay?"
while looking at his mangled corpse plastered all over the walls and ceiling of the trash compactor AND THEN LAUGHS AT HIM

who the hell are you and what have you done with the real alyx?
where did this well rounded character go?

I think the jeff chapter did a really good job of having alyx and the player be of the same mind

during the segments where you're with jeff she's dead silent, and it's not like you hear her thoughts, so you're just filled with dread

during the segments where you're at a distance you're maximum relaxed, and goofing with Larry and laughing at jeff's demise, if you chose that

funny thing - i bought my steam deck while at work

i saw the sale and i was like "man - should i buy it? or should i wait? i think i should wait"

and my boss was like "do it! no balls"
and i caved and bought it

im totally getting that new steam controller though

one thing i want them to add is a thing steamdecker have been asking for years now

optimised settings

if we can share controller presets and make our own
why not do something like that for graphics settings ?

sure - you can't just plug that straight into every game available on steam
but we could share it in just a text form or something? maybe some screenshots?
there's workarounds for that on the community hub - most of the work is already done
just make a new tab for it and make it easily accessible from steamos

plus keep in mind that it's running on steamos and not windows
so the general performance should be higher than on a similar windows machine

when my beloved steamy deck launched people were saying that it offered really good value too

that it was cheaper than they expected

now - i'm no business expert

but i feel like steam could do a sony thing and sell those things at a slight loss
