a single, optional. lone corner of a map where lighting, texture work, music and ambience come together to create this little space where you want to just stay and chill for a while and take it all in

when they were playtesting the coast levels they noticed one playtester swearing at seagulls getting close to his buggy
saying that they always mess up his car
so instead of laughing at it and moving on, those mad lads decided to build up an entire system that spawns a seagull near your car when it's out of your view for about a minute
and which then forces said seagull to land on a random part of your buggy and then poop on it
leaving pernament poop decals
but if that wasn't enough
then they scripted a thing that lets you wash those poop decals off your car by driving through shallow water
and all of that happened literally few months before the launch
when they were supposed to be gearing up for the release

you know what i really like about half life 2?
it's how damn replayable it is due to a lot of it being physics based
which leads to a lot of those random one-in-a-lifetime moments
in every playthrough
like "oh hey im gonna throw two grenades in the same spot"
but the explosion from the first one yeets the second one right at my face, fraction of a second before it explodes and decapitates me
"im gonna use the crossbow now" - thought bim, moments before nailing a combine soldier to a nearby wall
the thing is, i forgot about him, and next time i peeked out of the cover i started shooting at his corpse dangling off a wall thinking it was an enemy aiming at me
and then his friend gave me a buckshot lobotomy
back when i was revolting against the devs and carrying friendly turrets from one arena to another, i picked one up in a crowded room and it obscured my view so i didn't see a headcrab jumping right at my face
so it spooked me, i started flailing my mouse like i was having a stroke which knocked that turret out of my hands
which then fell over, freaked out and started shooting wildly - right at me
a friendly turret, i might add

Open world only is a huge segment of players in that game. You are definitely not aloneā¦ You might need to follow a random group to get some things done in the open world, but all they want is you to hit whatever loot piƱata they are also hitting. No other interaction necessary.

oh yeah absolutely. group play is rewarded in p much everything. i just avoid the things that involve group play, is what im saying lol
like..... im that kind of person that doesnt like to do things ive never done before in front of people bc im anxious abt whether theyre judging me even if i know theyre not remotely paying attention, that sort of headspace. that carries over into games so i tend to shy away from engaging stuff im unfamiliar with when theres strangers around. its dumb and annoying bc how else am i gonna learn lol but eh.
its gonna start getting embarrassing once i get 100+ mastery and still dont understand how combat works
