Adding in because I saw the question of "Why Silksong Meme" floating around - because it was initially announced some time ago, it became very, very common for people to say "Silksong? 👀" or some equivalent for every Nintendo Direct. Team Cherry have stayed quiet since the announcement, but it stays consistently in the "public consciousness" because it comes up during most every virtual games show announcement. I hope their team isn't very impacted by it. 😮‍💨

As a "player facing" employee at Supergiant, where we tend to play things close to the chest until we're ready, I can empathize.

Hmmm there have been a few negative reaction things that cropped up during my time on the team (since 2018). I think that they mostly arise due to the current industry standards we try to maintain (porting, languages, trying out new opportunities that players may not understand from their "consumer" side of things).

I come from a theater background where you kind of have to accept that "you can't please all the people all the time," but we try to listen to critique and feedback with intent, so I think the team "winning" comes from being willing to navigate when we're wrong or make mistakes. Or being patient when people have reason to be cautious around promises! Early access was invaluable with Hades, so much that we're doing it again, but we worked hard to stay aware of misgivings people have with formats like that.

It is a good question, but I don't think I have a nuanced answer for it. But along with looking at various platforms for player issues during early access, we also get to see the variety of feedback that emerges from different discussion platforms. So our team is often aware of repeated feedback points, even if it's not here on Discord. Our Discord feedback process has been invaluable for understanding player experiences overall, but it's not the only place we "take in" feedback, it's just less structured via other platforms since we don't have a format setup for submission.

I had been wondering whether narrative pacing or general narrative feedback generally was hard to get player feedback on. It's a lot easier to fall back on giving feedback on mechanics, because they are simple and either numbers based or objective-based (objective as in task, not objective as in the antonym to subjective), and i do mostly see feedback about those things. Hell, I mostly give feedback on those things because narrative stuff is complicated, murky, and sometimes feels like it would either require dialogue to explain the nuances, or more than a discord message of feedback

Mechanics stuff is also testable or wiki-able in ways that full conversation tree/conflicts between order of conversations between characters isn't as easy to make sure you're right about?

As an example, i got the eris line about being too self conscious to go to the baths with you, before the line where she's like 'wait the baths are available again? hell yes!' but with some of the other lines like this i haven't been able to remember cleanly that contradictions in character knowledge happened because it was 20 hours of gameplay apart, and i just have a vibe that it was wrong

You need to have artistic goals and those will shape who your game is for, but at the same time you can do something right or wrong for those goals, and doing those things right is a skill you can grow.
And early access can be good for that but you need to be careful to learn from criticism about execution while staying true to your vision or you get blandness.

with some myriad other variables regarding whether or not it can be communicated better, more broadly, needs to be, etc.

i do generally speaking find issue with kickstarter and early access as business models, even when there are individual examples like sgg that prove they are possible to do well enough. In the end, it's paying for a product that doesn't exist yet (as well as paying to be beta testers and first impressions for that product), and there's just very little in the business model that incentivizes... well, finishing a game. Aside from the desire to have people still hype about next time you put something up

Originally planned for a release in 2014, it has over the years released some 'modules' of what the game is promising to be, all the while selling very expensive in game ships for real money as further funding. the original campaign promises are still nowhere to be seen, the game has no planned release date or even a hope of seeing one in the next 5 years. and the game has constantly been continually hyped up by its audience. this is a tl;dr from someone who never jumped aboard and has only really observed it from the outside

Both giving and receiving feedback are skills, because audience and artist engage with a work from opposite ends. An artist builds from elements to produce an experience, while the audience has an experience and then tries to understand how the mechanics and other elements produced it. Ultimately the audience experience is the point and feedback can help refine it, but the artist needs to reconstruct the audience member's perspective and experience to diagnose issues, and the audience ought to make that easy by explaining their feelings and expressing why they think the elements produced it.

But ultimately a lot of taking feedback is about recognizing when there's a disconnect and whether the complainers' speculation about why is correct.

I think it will be fun to reflect on how the production style evolved between the three. ✅
