first impressions are similar to Rainworld: you're expecting metroidvania of some sort, but suddenly it's a HUGE open world, where there're no two similar rooms

the issue with rainworld are that kind of "soft gamovers", when you run out of food on the way to the next checkpoint and can't progress. and loading old save is not possible or pointless - food doesn't reload

so you have to always know what are you doing

It wont be there next cycle but if you sleep somewhere else it will probably be back

to sleep somewhere else, you need some food first

and getting there by itself takes almost whole day

yeah and usually on your way to somewhere else, or in the surrounding area theres food

theres a couple regions where it could work better but for the most part its fairly simple if you didnt get your path blocked by a lizard

i think shaded and drainage systems are the only ones that really have this problem though

shades mostly because its really dark and because its one of the regions where you cant really camp out around one shelter and just farm food for the most part. there isnt enough food around most of the shelters and shaded to just wait it out

but those areas are in the really linear parts and theres usually food on the way to the next checkpoint. like the ones in memory crypts

and drainage system just sucks

I think the biggest issue with rainworld from a gameplay perspective is all the rng that is a result of how the game goes about simulating an ecosystem

the fact that every creature is individually simulated and moving around independantly of you at all times means that sometimes you go through a pipe and a white lizard is waiting for you immediately and you just die

although some of the QOL added by the dlc update (you dont have to pay for the update part) mitigates this

Ignore the main quest, they haven't had a good one since literally Morrowind, but the environmental storytelling is actually pretty peak. As are the sidequests in general. (76 I simply have not tried so can't comment)

Because SBMM is a barely working bandaid that’s not slapped on a wound but on an entire amputated limb

Which is the lack of dedicated servers and small communities built around them

So it’s not up to you to find a place where you can play with people around your skill level - which you know

It’s up to some broken-ass algorithm that rarely even works to guess that and pair you with some other randos - if it even gets to that moment instead of putting up a white flag after 5 minutes of waiting and pairing you with a bunch of pros 20 levels higher

If you get on a server that’s full of pros and you get your ass kicked 20-0 in an old game - that’s on you, that’s your mistake
Leave that place and find another server

If sbmm puts you in that situation - there’s heck all you can do about it

Also systems like that discourage custom servers and custom maps and mods by design

Eh, there is that, I guess, but given the choice I would go for both I suppose? Like sometimes I just want a casual match against people who also just have the same 0.9-1.0 KDA as me without ending up with seals or clubbers, and not having to expend all the social effort to actually find servers. Other times I totally get that LFG and pub matchmaking has pretty much broken the old community-oriented approach to multiplayer.

Anyone looking forward to this? I'm slowly working my way through Hyper Light Drifter (it's really fabulous), and after Blaz Blue Entropy Effect, Risk of Rain 2 and now Hades, I'm kind've on a roguelike hunt. So much replayability and great combat/interesting mechanics. And the state of massive publishers is insane right now... couldnt really speak of the intended way of playing the game though bc the first thing i did when i got origins was run off into the desert for 40 hours before i remembered i should probably progress story and get the hidden blade and maybe make assassinations a lot easier lol

i hate the rpg style leveling system because its ridiculous to be playing an assassin game and not be able to do assassin things because the enemy is higher leveled but idk other than that i really enjoyed my time with it. but the fact i spent a significant chunk of my time just wandering around and taking five million screenshots of scenery should be noted haha

odyssey i didnt really play all that much because i picked it up in the midst of my greek mythos interest resurgence because of hades, so thats why i spent more time there in tour mode

general consensus online (last i checked some while ago) tends to be that theyre both okay games if you can get over the big cons like the leveling and standard ubisoft busywork but valhalla is a bit more mediocre. i havent picked it up, dont really plan to

personally.... i would rather play fenyx rising. still a ubisoft open world but shorter and more charming and doesnt suffer from as bad of map clutter

i am still bitter the sequel got canned for more assassins creed 😇
