i know this sounds like a weird word salad made up by a crazy conspiracy theorist on bath salts, but...
yeah - that's the game

and it's suprisingly profound and can tackle some serious stuff like mental health and suicide in a suprisingly refreshing way

and only appears in a flashback mission

While on 8 - there was still quite a bezel around it

then there's the tower
the classic 10 fights tower this series had from the beginning
here it's just a... 2d jaypeg copy-pasted 10 times with a character portrait moving up next to it at like... 20 frames per second
what the hell happened here?

stages look pretty, i guess
but about half of them is so pretty and colorful they would fit Ori and the blind forest more than this violent fighting game about people turning other people into chunky salsa

they're also super cluttered with background details which makes the whole game harder to read while at the same time having none of the cool interaction MKX had

ok - time for my viddya rant of the day

i went back to MKXL just to confirm i wasn't going crazy with praising this game when compared to 11 and 1 and... yeah

it's still the best one in the series

sure it may look slightly dated when compared to newer games

but it still has the best roster of fighters in the entire history of this series
combat feels fast and snappy but still managable
combos and specials are great
level interaction was a great addition that on one hand helps newer players while adding just that slight additional layer of strategy (and it makes picking a stage actually mean something now)
and it has the best implementation of the EX meter out of all those "new-gen" mortal kombat games

costume designs are great
the krypt is a top-tier mode
and living towers and the plethora of modifiers make it a great couch co-op game

it ain't perfect
not with goro's bullcrap jumping attack that can hit you from two postal codes away
or jason's hyper-hyper-hyper armor on every other attack
or scorpions absurd damage output

factions turned out to be a bit of a blunder
a literal nothing feature
and it has a bit of a lackluster tutorial

but still - all in all
out of all the mortal kombat games that are still available in online stores - this one is still the best
and it's the cheapest too!

Played a bit of harmony: the fall of reverie yesterday
It’s so beautiful and the voice acting is good, but the backgrounds are 3D so there is a loading screen every couple of sentences. Really took me out of it
Writing is also just okay, the concept is cool and then it doesn’t feel like there’s the impact it describes (yet)

I bought it on sale because it had under 100 reviews at the time and I wanted to see why it had such mixed reception
