Generally you start with one god keepsake in Tartarus and switch to another god keepsake in Asphodel. After that, you just take keepsakes for survivability (typically the Evergreen Acorn) or utility otherwise (e.g., the Bone Hourglass). That's why usually builds are centered on two gods. You also try to avoid gods that aren't important to your build (except for Master Chaos and Lord Hermes, those two will never hurt your build because they work differently from the other gods (no Duo Boons etc.)).
When you can't avoid taking boons from another god, you only pick boons that don't hurt your odds of getting what you want. For example, don't take a Special boon from somebody else if you want Heartbreak Flourish; don't take boons that unlock Duo Boons with Lady Artemis or Lady Aphrodite if you want their Duo Boon (Heart Rend) because then you might end up being offered Lightning Rod instead of Heart Rend...; etc.
There's a lot more nuances, of course. You'll get better at all of that the more experience you get. I don't expect you to get a Heart Rend build, for example, as powerful as I would get because I have over 1k hours in the game and have been talking strategies and build meta and everything since Early Access. But I can at least give you direction, so that you at least know what to look for and try to get. And I think that's already helping a lot because now you at least know what to aim for to get something powerful, you just gotta figure out how to get there.

Well, you can't get the Special from both. You can only have one Special boon. These are the requirements to have a chance at being offered Heart Rend from them:
One of each:
Lady Aphrodite: Heartbreak Strike, Heartbreak Flourish, Crush Shot, or Passion Dash
Lady Artemis: Deadly Strike, Deadly Flourish, or True Shot
So long as you have one of those boons from each of them, you have a chance of being offered Heart Rend when you pick up any of their boons.
Deadly Strike + Heartbreak Flourish will unlock Heart Rend, and it also perfectly plays into the typical Special > Dash-Strike x2 combo of Nemesis.
Heart Rend will increase your crit damage to enemies that are Weak.
Heartbreak Flourish will apply Weak, and then your crits from Deadly Strike will do extra damage.

even though some new players dont understand the bow at first, its an extremely simple weapon to use. all you do is dash, hold attack till the powershot window, release. its ranged which makes it a safe weapon as long as you are dash powershotting. other melee weapons have more complicated attack chains and dps often comes at the expense of placing you into close range while using dashes. the only stumbling block is learning to dash powershot and realizing that standing attacks are gunna get you killed

Ah, usually if he doesn't offer Lightning Strike, you just grab Electric Shot and hope to see Lightning Strike later. Drunken Strike is definitely a great pivot, though.

I personally went with Chiron Bow at first as it's a pretty forgiving weapon for a newer player (being a distance weapon) and very powerful with the heatseeking special.
But obviously the bow might not be for everybody, so if you prefer closer range, there's good options. It's just generally about finding what weapon you enjoy stock and seeing what you'd like from the upgrades.

I've had nearly 3k darkness in one 40 minute run (1162 from the final boss alone). So while it's tempting to farm short runs, it's definitely not the most efficient approach once full runs are reliably doable).

But it's a very easy way to do it, so I understand the temptation.
But the way I would think of it most of all, at least personally, is that if you're just farming Tartarus for Darkness and then resetting in magma is something you do because it's easy for you... well, it also means you're only getting practice in the regions that are already easy for you. But it takes longer to get to the parts that are harder for you, the regions where you need more practice. So instead of throwing the run, you can just push forward and get a little more practice against the tougher opponents. And if you die while doing that, well... it's the same result as if you just farmed and reset except you also got a bit of practice in. And then maybe instead of just Tartarus becoming the easy region, it'll be Tartarus and Asphodel that are easy for you because you've played them so much.
But if you don't try to push through Asphodel, then that's just not gonna happen.

By my second question I meant their actual appearance. I know what aspects are, so what I meant was alt-skins, I guess. I'm wondering what the requirement for getting an alt one is since I'm p sure my spear got a new skin.

m like 99% sure, without recording a clip to double-check, that if an enemy is inflicted with 5 stacks of Hangover that each do e.g. 10 damage, it counts as a single hit of 50 damage rather than 5 hits of 10 damage. Definitely as far as crits are concerned because you would never see a Hangover crit of 30 from a single stack + 40 normal hits from the other 4 stacks or anything like that. It would just be a single hit that crits for 150. I used to think that each stack can crit individually, but I've never seen that happen. At least not when I paid attention.

It's 340ms for a perfect catch. With average reaction speed that's perfectly doable like 99% of the time with a decent monitor. TVs add a lot of display lag if they're not in "gaming mode", which most modern TVs have now (potentially under a different name), so that's often an issue why players struggle with fishing. But even with gaming mode enabled, TVs have a lot more display lag than any gaming monitor.
It can take a little bit of practice, too, and you should ignore the bobs and just look for a white flash above the bobber instead.
Also, there can only be three fake bobs, so the fourth bob is always real if the first three were fake. And from what I can tell, fake bobs have an interval of 2-5 seconds while the real bob has an interval of 1-2 seconds. So if it takes more than 2 seconds, it should be a fake bob. Meaning you should look for the real bob within a short time after you start fishing or within a short time after a previous fake bob.
That might also help.
Though if you just look for the white flash, I think most players shouldn't have too much trouble with it after a bit of practice to recognize the cue.

Yeah, like MiKE said, you use god keepsakes to get the boons you want. Normally one god keepsake in Tartarus and another god keepsake in Asphodel. And then you use keepsakes for survivability in the regions after that.
