Those 2-boons are called trial rooms. They are definitely a difficulty spike, but some gods are much easier than others.

Once you’re largely done with blood/diamond farming deep pockets is hands down better

You should be rolling into the end of Elysium with ~800 gold using golden touch to be able to safely, consistently afford the blood by the end of styx if it’s offered

When he calls in a god i stay perimeter and dodge the gods attack - dodge spear - dodge into attack - dodge to perimeter - repeat ||

SO, there are 3 layers in the game, Tartarus, Asphodel, and Elysium. Elysium is the closest to heaven you can get, and Zag is trying to fight his way up to earth and Olympus. From what I can gather he's fighting shades or the ghosts of those who have passed. And all the Olypmian gods are on Olympus, they're just sending boons down to Zag to help him get out.
