longspears can hit you from ridiculously far away, but they’re vulnerable to circle strafing, brightswords are fast but freeze in place occasionally, giving you an opportunity to strike, greatbows can mess you up but they’re not very tough

@formal rover there is no "opportunity to strike" when brightswords freeze. The only safe time to approach them is during an attack, from outside the angle it will hit

@green tinsel honestly, this isn’t a bad strategy. Greatbows don’t have much health and will die pretty fast if you prioritise them. If you’re using a ranged weapon, it’s often a good idea to get in close as well; they often try to back away from you which will delay their inevitable volley

or dash anywhere from 1-7 times (seven is the most I've seen but might not be the max) in random directions before attacking

To be clear, each time you reduce the central head's health by one third, it shields itself and you need to kill the surrounding Hydra heads. It's best to kill them fast and pick them off one by one while only focusing otherwise on avoiding magma explosives.

It's the best combination with Dionysus because it can quickly apply max (or near max) poison (what was it called, drunk?) status to enemies, instantly, and that means tons of auto dps without shooting a single extra time.

I then went on to win 8 times with drastically different shield builds
Literally anything should be fine
Focus on ones that give you dash damage (I like Poseidon) as well as increasing your dash-attack damage. I tend to get to the point that 30-50% of my damage is evaded (I use the keepsake for evasion + speed boosts and get that racked up in early levels + one from Hermès to get 10%-20% evade)
I also put 4 Blood into the shield before I realized what I was doing, so my shield was doing +12 damage on Attack
If you can get the Athena Boon for reflecting on regular attacks, do it. That applies to regular attacks, dash strikes, and your shield-rush.
