Correct, upgrading rarity one level will do more than a Pom will - balanced by there’s 3 sources of boon rarity upgrades in the game, Eurydice, trading out a boon and rare crop

Upgrading from Lv.1 to Lv.2 adds the same damage regardless of rarity. For example, the first pom on Heartbreak Strike always adds +20% damage.
Whether a pom or a rarity upgrade is better depends on the boon.

Dio and Zeus are good for fast, low-damage attacks. I prefer Zeus there.
Artemis is generally good. It'll proc more on a faster weapon and do more damage per proc on a slower weapon.
If your attacks swing with a good AoE, athena is a strong defensive choice.

When you're Stubborn Defiance, Last Stand and Deathless Stand from Lady Athena can "replenish" one DD each. If you lose your SD before taking the boon, she will give you a DD, and then when you exit the chamber, you'll get your SD back like normal.
But if you don't lose your SD before taking the boon, you don't get a DD from her.
Important tactic for high heat.
