Merciful End is extremely powerful if you apply it effectively, and since fresh file limits the number of gods as well as removes hammers, it's the go-to build for clearing

originally they served as a darkness sink once you purchased everything else that was available for darkness, players that had been playing through early access for a while had excess amounts of darkness with nothing to spend it on. but then a late game system was added to spend darkness and other currency once you've done everything else, and the darkness spent on the mirror was lowered significantly

Take Poseidon for Ocean's Bounty, and take every Chaos gate you see to get the increased darkness/gem drops boons. Use Fated Persuasion if you have it unlocked in the mirror
And then just do runs on difficulty levels that you've already cleared so you just get Darkness as rewards from bosses
And use Olympian Favor instead of Dark Foresight in the mirror to get more blue laurel rooms
