think rarity as the base number and level as an increase calculated off that number

I tried to use two duo boons in tandem, Curse of Longing (aphrodite/ares, causes doom effects to repeat continuously on enemies that are weak) and Merciful End (athena/ares, causes attacks that deflect to also instantly trigger ongoing doom effects)

Well Curse says that doom repeatedly strikes Weak enemies, which in practice seems to just reapply the doom effect after it hits (though with reduced damage)

Merciful End says it immediately activates doom effects, to be fair saying it removes the doom effect is redundant as that's the way doom normally works but it might still be programmed that way

It's not maining so much as it is exploring a weapon and finding out what clicks with you the most. Sure, you need the Darkness and Gems, but it is just a meager bonus, when you take into account that you can get bonuses mid-run that go beyond Dark Thirst.

All specials are good, though. Spear and Shield offer ranged capability, with the Spear's callback allowing for a backstab. Say you pair that with Aphrodite? You're inflicting weak with the first attack, then you call back the spear and not only backstab, but get the bonus from weak.

Bow special? AoE. Pair it with Poseidon and you're pushing enemies back. Pair it with Zeus and you're making lightning bolts on all of them.

Shield bounces between enemies too so you could very well use those two gods with it aswell, though all of them are viable.

Exploring weapons allows you to discover these techniques organically, which you otherwise aren't developing due to the constant switching. It's healthy to switch of course, but you're still new :P

With Stygius dash strike is usually the what I go for, ending the combo with a special is long enough for both my dashes to refill

And ofc you have Daedalus boons that allow you to, per Volty's example, empower your dash strike to hit twice, or empower your special. For the bow, you could get a boon that adds the amount of arrows shot by your special to cover more ground, the spear and shield can get empowered, charged up specials etc.
