If going soul (timer) the stones staying in longer mean you get the stone stuck in them effect longer. So it is a mechanical detriment to upgrade it in that scenario (unless I misunderstand some thing) but I think soul isn't commonly used with lodgable casts. I only use it with trippy flare.
