4-5 chambers per tunnel. When you're in the third chamber, the game rolls if the next chamber is the fountain room or a large encounter or a minichamber. If the fourth chamber is a minichamber again, then it rolls if the next chamber is the fountain or a large encounter.
So for a speedrun, for example, you'd ideally get a 4-chamber tunnel with miniboss into a 4-chamber tunnel with fountain.
