New players actually tend to do very poorly with shield, in my experience coaching, because they're not getting any halfway decent DPS out of it is without guidance. Which makes encounters take forever. And they play too passive with block and take hits in the back because they're too stationary and not watching their positioning.

Malphon is actually one of the better ones for first clear because while it's risky, of course, it's also super intuitive to play and so long as you don't take Tempest Strike, you'll get some damage out of it.

The shield special will always be a set distance. You can change the thrown direction, And you can recall it at any time. At any time. And it isn't an option that slows you down or interrupts you. You should be recalling it often. Get close to enemies, throw the special. Dash over them and recall the special, or knock enemies into the path of the special with your attack and bullrush.
