Theyre also often much lower in scope
Indie games aren't without crunch-like practices, but they're more often self imposed
That's a differant case
That's because indie games tend to have a bigger focus on the artist's vision rather than churning out a new game every year and a half
It's odd because the country I live in now seems to have something against unions whereas I'm used to everything being unionized.
A massive metroidvania made by 3 people
^
Unions in nations depends a lot on history
So it's an act of passion, not monetisation
"give me clicks read my stuff" :kappa: jk
Poland is historically anti-union
For example, germany has a long history of unions
But think about if the entire CDPR team decided to strike right now
So unions remain fairly strong
They'd have them by the cojones.
Yup
But you know who's really responsible for crunch?
i mean Riot employees did that this year for crunch and also sexist practices but the company just laywer walled them
Oh god yeah. Riot.
why i stopped considering ever playing league
Consumers are responsible for crunch, because we bemoan launch dates getting pushed back.
Yeah
Yeah riot is a uh
not just that but every game released has to make more money
Difficult case
every year there need to be more profits
Do you know how many times Diablo 2 got pushed back?
There were definitely big problems in the company, and Im sure there still are
People tend to be more impatient nowadays
Well
Either that or the impatient ones just got louder
Geometric economic growth is why there's such an atrocious inequality problem in the world right now.
Cant say Ive stopped playing the game though, but I have stopped spending money on it
At least until I can be sure they fixed their issues
Actually no. People were talking about the animations for the new Pokémon games and the lack of a national dex and most fans were very supportive of the idea of delaying the release.
The great irony is, crunch actually reduces productivity in terms over 6 weeks.
Yeah
there are consumers who bemoan the push back, there are also those who say take your time my wallet needs recovering anyway, so it's also a matter of which side they decide to listen to
So I wouldn't blame consumers for a management issue.
Even below 6 weeks is uh, questionable
Its "we want it now culture" combined with what i would call unchecked capitalism to make not just a lot of money, but literally "all of the money ever"
Because burnout occurs very quickly in that environment
Humans are not very good at long periods of intensive work
@wide ember Again, I'm generalizing, and talking to the majority, not individuals.
I'm willing to wait, if it means the product is the best it can be
It doesn't help that executives pocket a large amount of the profits
The sword and shield controversy certainly is an interesting one
and itll eventually flop on itself because what the triple a community is doing these days isnt sustainable for a long term. Its just gonna be real bad when it does flop.
So not much really goes into the company itself
yes, though I assume we-want-it-now are vocal majority, not actual majority
Executive pay should be criminal.
I'm happy to wait for however long it takes for the king knight campaign to come out
As long as the devs are happy with it
do what nintendo does and cut your executive bonuses so you have enough money to pay your workers their wages
Blood. And. Darkness. Executive pay should be criminal.
I have a ton of respect for Hinterlands because Raph -refuses- to do crunch, and also won't post release dates. 😛
We just need a post-scarcity society
Executive pay, like the CEOs and stuff?
We can make enough food to feed the population.
starts chanting "fire bobby kotick"
And then, proper communism
Yes, Zag.
Any time someone dictates their own wages, corruption will happen. Welcome to the life of shareholders and CEOs
Ah, so like with activision blizzard
Their CEO makes more than Sony's
while we're at it fire the head of EA and fire randy pitchford just so he stops talking on twitter tbh
A lot more
Just because corruption is rampant doesn't mean we should be 100% okay with it.
Bobby Kotick is that one guy that walks into the office once a month, grabs a paycheck, and leaves 😄
No, I'm saying that we should change who determines how much they get paid.
Fire the head of EA at Randy Pitchford
yes i like this idea
That'd work.
"eat the rich people" :comrade:
Just... Just Process all of them.
Hm.
Remember when Randy Pitchford was a game designer that got his hands dirty?
Yeah me neither
lol
I doubt that would be an enjoyable experience
while im not promoting the devouring of the entire 1%, i am just gonna say... you are what you eat :kappa:
xD
Please no The Secret's in the Sauce or Sweeney Todd references. Please.
We just need to abolish money
Okay, time to do some unpacking. Great chat all.
Later my dude
See you!
Cya
the secret's in the sweeney todd
john locke would agree with you on that one (and in some cases so would i but thats just cause im a college student who fears for their future existence cause money)
Would you say the stance "If you're born into the 1% but DON'T leave it or otherwise contribute to its continued existence, you're guilty" is too much, Cerb?
Later, Orpheus.
Honestly I just wish we would reach a post-scarcity society soon
Hannibel is the secret in the sweeney todd
Imagine being free to do what you want because you dont have to worry about survival
not to get too political because i dont think we're really supposed to in this discord, if you have money, you ought to be expected to contribute to society in a proportional and meaningful way
That's pretty out there, man
This is #off-topic-discussion, as long as we keep it civil it's safe.
Alternatively we need a Vetinari as the head of state in all states
proportional to your amount of wealth
And nations
i guess mods will tell us to shut it down if we're supposed to
"Power to the people" refers to all of them
👁
👀
"always watching mike wazowski"
did someone say mods
I can also post the eyes emoji
Look so long as we dont sing songs from the french revolution we should be fine
XD Ah so no guillotines. Got it.
maximillian robespierre is who i aspire to be in life :kappa:
yall ever heard of "the conquest of bread"
I fully support a wealth tax instead of an income tax
I have not, Cake.
i would actually prefer to be pierre despereaux but robespierre can be my third
Imagine being in the french revolution and actually going "I'd love some cake actually" and everyone around you is losing their minds and you just want cake
Dont be Robespierre, he was a madman
and im not? :p
turns out you can do communism without all the authoritarian part, and it's really nice actually
I beat this game at 120 Heat with the Adamant Rail with 500% Torment
tell me im sane
do it now
I.
I call being Reginald Shoe
Ok, slight amendment:
Why would you do that to yourself?
That's terrifying
He was a homicidal madman

Because I hate the shield, love the rail, and wanted a 120 heat run
and i hate frenzy
granted this was before the big bad update
I can almost make it to Hades with 250% Torment.
i bragged about it on my twitter last month :kappa: self advertisement
and the sgg account responded to me to feed my ego :p
Also can I just say that "Kiwis in Elysium" sounds like an altrock band name?
I think I'll stick with this nickname
I checked, apparently it is not
oh there fixed my name
Honestly I collect these "phrases that sound like an alt-rock band"
Like when our GPS finds an unfamiliar street, it says "Street with no name" in german
Which is also a good alt-rock band name
Isn't that a U2 song?
I'd name an album "street with no name"
What did english MP3 players say when the track had no information about the artist
Just "unknown Artist"?
BLOOD AND DARKNESS THERE'S A NEW PLATINUMGAMES DIRECTED BY ONE OF THE DUDES BEHIND NIER:AUTOMATA.
You mean Astral Chain?
And yes, they typically say Unknown Artist.
yeah!!
Astral Chain looks great~
It was announced quite a while back
I might get a switch lite for it
It looks pretty good
I bought a new SD just for that and Three Houses.
Anyway, I want to have a band called "unknown artist" have an album called "unknown album" with the first track being "unknown track"
I don't have a Switch (yet), and almost all of my time talking about games the last three months.
Granted, this joke was way funnier before spotify was the music service of choice
But Ill be damned if I let that stop me
i crave more drakenier tho
Preach, rats.
OwO
From The Broad Collection: Jean‐Michel Basquiat, Untitled, 1981, acrylic and oilstick on canvas, The Eli and Edythe L. Broad Collection. Many of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s paintings are in some way autobiographical, and Untitled may be considered a form of self-portraiture. T...
Yeah Ill play it, it reminds me of a more polished Freedom Wars visually
Still curious about their other game
We got like a short teaser trailer at E3 2018
And radio silence since
The action RPG?
It's still scheduled for this year.
Anyway, Ill have to wait one months before getting Astral Chain since the switch lite doesnt release as quickly
Though, online play with the lite will be less good
Since its via wifi
Which isnt an issue for Astral Chain, but if I want to play Splatoon 3 if that comes out
Babylon’s Fall looked really intriguing, it’s a shame that we’ve seen literally nothing about it
Other than a cryptic trailer at E3 2018
when that trailer was released i thought it was drakengard 4 and almost lost it
alas
Not too keen on the art direction tbh
Was hoping it'd be more babylon inspired
But it's just the usual christian knight stuff :/
It'll probably be fun though
Do we have any actual images?
Random share: https://photos.app.goo.gl/e5AJGbpijHcYMygt7
Is there any chance we would get Supergiant's 10th anniversary poster as a full hd wallpaper?
I sure hope so
very off topic question: chinese people used bamboo steamer for steaming food in the past, but how did europeans steam their food before modern marguerite steamer?
or were crabs always steamed on something like that since renaissance or something?
I'd guess basket steamer. Like a double boiler but with wholes in the bottom of the top bowl.
So this is great.
I'm an avid dabbler in random Minecraft creation stuff. And their newest dev version added these giant bees.
I can likely recreate Soul Catchers with these bees. Everyone will begin to hate me.
what no house full of bees
Find video clips by quote. GetYarn.io now.
I'm pretty sure I just think in scrubs quotes
bees are nice until they are stinging you
though I'm not yet sure what happens if they decide to swarm on me (the nesty swarm, not attack swarm)
I've seen videos where humans are super happy to see bees swarming and would happily scope them up like they are cute fluid kitten or something
something that video game, minecraft or not, has failed to covey so far
ok we need a video game with fluffy bee pet stat
Do any of you know badass historical martial artists who were also disabled?
like the guy missing an arm yet still was a sharpshooter with a bow?
I'm not sure how real he was though
Yeah, like that, except actually real.
I"m sure there are a few with undiagnosed mental health issues
OK. How many martial arts grandmasters were blind?
Oh. My. God.
Is that cat okay???? :(
That's what her friends are wondering.
cats are like four legged birds sometimes
RE Today's earlier conversation about crunch and such: https://mmohuts.com/video/modern-wolf-reveals-gamescom-2019-highlight-reel/
Modern Wolf is a new publisher on the scene, with a goal of making a statement: They are committed to ethical game development.
This is what we need more of. I love seeing this, and I'll buy their games even if they only sit in my library, on general principles.
im sorry for the hate you guys are getting on steam, you guys rock! @ supergiant team
People are gonna hate, whether it's deserved or not
Mind you, I'm not looking very hard, but I'm not seeing the hate? At least not in the usual review bomb form.
me neither, seemed like people were excited to play hades on steam
And I honestly think it's an extension of the epic exclusivity backlash
It's mostly on the hades page
Community thingy
ahhh
Which SGG don't deserve because they were up front about the exclusivity from the start
Not like others cough Metro Exodus, Shenmue III cough
Okay, but Metro Exodus honored all Steam pre-orders, on Steam.
That one -still- doesn't deserve the f'n hate.
They did, which is great
The move after an extensive pre order window is my personal issue
And after the 1 yr exclusivity, it will probably reopen on Steam, too.
So. What.
It didn't hurt a single person.
Not one.
10 days before launch too
It hurts those who planned on buying it on steam but couldn't pre order before the announcement for whatever reason
No it doesn't.
Agree to disagree because I flat out don't believe that
It doesn't hurt them at all. They can in fact buy it on Epic* for 10 dollars less, now. And not having a game on Steam doesn't hurt them regardless.
They can still buy the game if they choose. They're not cheated out of anything. It's all just entitlement.
Nice evasion of the swear filter btw
yyyyyyeah don’t do that please.
Oh good grief. That's a bit of a stretch.
Brought up more than half an hour after the end of a conversation because someone is buttsore.
Oops, I said butt, is that evading the swear filter too?
Context is as always important
no.
And when the rules explocitly say to the extent "no swearing" hiding swears behind asterisks doesn't make it any better
It's "Keep it clean" iirc
Nobody used any asterisks, and your name doesn't look purple.
“butt” isn’t avoiding the swear filter because you’ve typed the word in full. typing “f’n” avoids the swear filter because of you typed it out in full the filter would catch it
Stop trying to backseat mod because you're angsty.
oh look
🙄
my name is purple and i’m telling you to not do it, would ya look at that?
Fine. I didn't do it again. But you wouldn't even have noticed it if the angsty one didn't try to make problems where there wasn't one.
Angsty. No, slightly irratated maybe
no, actually, i noticed and was trying to decide whether to DM you or just say it in the channel.
Really? Search "F'n"
I've used it 6 other times in this channel alone and it's never been a problem.
And like I said, I won't use it again. But Aggy still doesn't need to backseat mod.
Onto something completely differant.
Anything exciting shown/announced/previewed at gamescom so far?
ooh niceu ^_^
I've never played it before, but seen a couple of speedruns and it looked like a pretty fun game :3
I ended up knitting an infinity scarf, the ending part looks horrible though and I forgot to twist it before connecting, I’ll fix it tomorrow
I've never really liked scarves because a lot of the ones I've seen have scratchy fabric
But now my face is always getting cold and i think i could use one
I used this super chunky yarn to make sure there are more air pockets, and it’s very soft
oooh
bernat brand yarn comes in very soft material and super bulky, and is usually machine washable and dryable, so for people who have trouble finding good looking comfy scarf or hat for cold weather it’s decent yarn
Mine is 85% acrylic and 15% nylon, they also sell 100% cotton yarn and traditional wool yarn
cotton is warmer than acrylic and softer than wool but if it gets wet it’ll freeze your head off
wool has terrible texture though, it’s hard and abrasive
Quick shout out to our Brazilian brothers and sisters. Hope you're safe and well.
not again, Brazil is like the Fertile Crescent or China all over again
Can’t launch hades( error
@keen valley check out #hades-tech-fixes-old or #h1-tech-support if none of them work for you
Biomutant still looks good, or so Ive heard, but otherwise not much interesting at gamescom
Mostly indie stuff like Crosscode
I checked out the section of games shown off that’s on the steam front page
Some cute indies
Spiritfarer is there but I’m not sure they’re showing new stuff for it
Oh and a new game from the Endless Legends/Space guys thats apparently neat
I am so STOKED for spiritfarer, looks adorable and wholesome and good.
sends Kamilla big tablet energy
😖 🙏
i have two slides left....in my pyre video......
Oh no
more importantly i have half a comission
Is the warranty still good?
🙏 🙏 🙏
its strength? I send that
UHHHH its 6 years old
Oh no
Oh Bother
for a little while its been working as if im drawing thru jelly but it conked out entirely and i tried switching out the plugs but still no 😔
oh nooooooo
I just read the last Q&A, am I the only one that wold like Amir to share his homebrew dungeons and dragons ruleset?
Dota 2's new hero that just got revealed is a grandmotherly goblin who makes/gives out cookies and has a giant cute lizard
also she has guns
.... thats basically Kled from League except somehow less exciting
reminds me of the watchdogs trailer w/ assassin grandma
KLED, THE LEGEND Network 1 sports?
Ah yes, Punk Grandma
Nah I mean Kled the champ from league of legends
I guess this hero being a grandma is neat
someone has already made fanart of her: https://i.redd.it/csoye5acv6i31.png
@copper lark I'm in love with Moenbryda
i think we're all in love with moenbryda
we are all
love moenbryda
Personally: Chin of 1 shadow of 2
You mean on the hoodie?
yeah
Really? Interesting, I made it smaller because I thought it looked odd
shrug
i like that
The chin was definitely starting to feel a bit ridiculous
I think at this point, outside of some minor detail changes on the zipper and the little string things hoodies have, Ill probably not change much
Maybe make the right arm a little less stiff
bad suggestion from too much twewy: please add pins and patches to your guy
btw there is a dot on upper right
OH he does look like the reapers from twewy kinda :O
it’s the garage band hoodie
lol yea
the sequel to my fav book comes out in under a month and i only just realised and im
What book is it Syd?

i rlly want the shb ost on spotify so i can jam to the titania theme without having to keep my phone open
Shb?
I swear those two young twin not-elves are always there in major non-combat cutscenes next to protag
and I'm glad that their outfits actually match and show about the same amount of skin, they differ only in colours or in chirality
@knotty frost it’s because “sb” refers to stormblood, the previous expansion, so we gotta use “shb” instead
Also, FFXIV is big on 3-letter abbreviations
....is it?
oh
well in fairness making a two letter abbreviation for most of the jobs would be hard
“bard”, for example. BD? BR?
True, but most MMOs dont use abbreviations alltogether
is BM black mage or blue mage?
BLU
Ah
black mage is BLM
Yeah that one I knew
Oh, disciples of the land are also abbreviated with 3 letters?
all of them are
Neat
But yeah, FFXIV loves its 3-letter abbreviations
Bit surprised it wasnt the case for the previous expansions, but
How would abbreviate Heavensward with 3 letters anyway
HVW? HVN?
Both seem a bit clunky is what I mean
yeah
Stormblood would be STB?
Now Im just curious if theyll ever make a job that doesnt have a good 3-letter abbreviation
Also (besides the obvious reason that Ninja was established in FF already) I think I know why they dont have an Assassin class
ASN
although that one is perilously close to AST for astrologian and i think we all know what the fans would use anyway
Exactly
Never underestimate the internets love for childish humour
Also ASN sounds more like the abbreviation for the asian servers
Any C++ people in here? I'm running into an LNK2019 using template classes and have no idea where it's coming from :< I've put up a gist here:
https://gist.github.com/MikouZonata/f0e6ffdf6c062412c504ffb8cc351978
Can you guys recommend some other games which are as top notch as Supergiant's? With similar art level
I would recommend; Hyper Light Drifter, Gris, Hollow Knight, Celeste, Cuphead, Mark of the Ninja, Limbo, Inside, Dust: An Elysian Tail
do you mean a similar art style, or a similar art quality?
@autumn pasture both
my suggestions don't apply then but some of those other recs sound good
i've heard ori and the blind forest is good, but i haven't played it yet so i can't speak personally to that
@hexed hollow I've heard HPL has pretty poor fight system (only 1 blade slice and useless bombs). HK - a piece of art, indeed (waiting for sequel). Cuphead - i think this game is made only for speedrunners
Mark of the Ninja - excellent game (Sadly, no sequel). Limbo - pretty short game, but decent.
Will try Gris, Celeste, Inside,
Dust: An Elysian Tail - the graphics look childish
@autumn pasture ORI - is one of my favorite games. It is a truly a piece of art.
i haven't finished hld yet but i have some friends who really like it, imo the combat system isn't bad, it's just more old school about attack patterns and getting into a groove than it is about outpacing enemy damage
When Ori and Hollow Knight sequels come out - it will be best moments of mo life
hollow knight has a dlc or expansion or something coming out, right?
silksong?
that's another one i haven't beaten yet 😅
Silksong will be full-fledged game.
Wish were would be more such epic metridvania platformers as ORI and HK
i hear dead cells is good
Yes, Dead Cells has an outstanding art style. Recommend.
But it is like Hades, when you die - you start from the beginning
Dead Cells also has great sence of humor, a lot of weapons to try (really a lot, some of them are jokes like sparta leg kick).
Furi looks like nothing else, i can't even compare it to something (havent played yet tho)
Obligatory Crosscode mention here
@hasty kernel This style has nothing similar with Supergiant's, brah
No console /pepehands/
i would mail you my ps3 if it wasn't totally stupid for me to do so
It would take a lot effort to transfer it to Russia
Furi is what I'd describe as boss rush the game based on what I've played
esp from aus, the shipping prices are nuts
fun, but also quite difficult
it's traditional japanese painting instead of oil painting like sgg but how about okami?
it's beautiful, funny and enjoyable
Maybe its just me, but Okami gameplay and artstyle looks painful to watch
oh, shovel knight is also really good
okami is a bit unusual art wise, i can see how it might not be for everyone
OFF is also good, it's a very small indie and it's kind of out there but it has a small cult following
i gotta get around to playing that
shame i don't know french though, i gotta go off the translation
wonder if there's a literary analysis of it somewhere
shovel knight is getting it's 4th campaign soon™ as well ^_^
I look for games that have PERFECT visual style (Bastion, Hades, Pyre, Hollow Knight, Ori and the Blind Forest, Dead Cells, Mark of the Ninja) + They should have a PERFECT gameplay (Bastion, Hades, Pyre, Hollow Knight, Ori and the Blind Forest, Dead Cells, Mark of the Ninja) ... OH WAIT
This list is complete
I've heard that FEZ is more like a game for cryptographers, which cannot be passed without making notes, solving sick puzzles with QR codes and other Sherlock Holmes stuff
Hm, does anyone has a review to Child of Light?
not especially hard, story is pretty basic but it sure is pretty
art and music wise

I didn't particularly care for child of light gameplay or story-wise but yeah the aesthetics are good
Nice, will add it to the list
You want a game for cryptographers, play Riven lmao
I've had enought puzzles in WITNESS. Hell, this game turned my braind upside down
Especially if you don't ever look in google for clues
Btw, speaking of Sherlock Holmes stuff, I would recommend The Talos Principle, if someone is looking for something to shake their brain a little bit
Or not just little bit
i haven't played either, but dandara and aragami seem promising and to your taste
onix, have you heard of thunderlotus games
Hmmm, looks pretty good.
theyve made jotun, sundered, and now theyre making spiritfarer. the art is all fantastic but the gameplay is all pretty different from game to game
Spiritfarer looks promising
yeah i cant wait for it
jotun and sundered were both very much games with "epic boss fights" as the selling point and spiritfarer looks like the complete opposite so im like, so hyped
actually, it has the same vibe as pyre somewhat
ive been in the golden saucer all day....... ive mastered some of the minigames
i only go in there for mini cactpot (which i suck at) and the fashion report
i wanna figure out the minion minigame bc
i collect minions,, but
oh i also go in there for triple triad
has anyone been following (not that theres much) witchbrook?
I am stoked for that in the same way as spiritfarer
Oh I played jotun because they gave it away for free
A bit rough around the edges tbh, but I'm sure they've improved
Walking around this big empty level, having slayed a million dwarves
Ack
Now that you mention it
I should check out what's up on epic
nothing on steam has been particularly tempting
oh i havent heard of witchbrook before!
man i just finished smile for me today
its so cute
tetris effect has no reason to be as artistically stunning as it is
Anyone got any non-gacha preferably offline Android mobile game suggestions?
uhh pretty sure cultist simulator is on android and i love it so i gotta recommend that
I really didn't like it when I played it on desktop.
i found the only minesweeper app on the play store that didnt have ads, and thats the only thing i play on my phone
I honestly want to get into game dev just because there are so many games I want to play that don't exist.
but i dont think it's on there anymore
I have a paid sudoku app for that reason.
yeah sudoku is cool
oh! thats fair, didnt know or remember you played it
man i was kind of disappointed with smile for me
the ending wasn't very good but most of the game was So cute
oooh a youtuber i watch recommended trying that game out
i dont say that a lot about games really but i wish it was longer
i wish i could stay and hang out in the habitat forever just making people happy and hanging out
so yeah i understand the disappointment with the ending but the rest is like.... oh i love this
Offline-wise there isnt much from what Ive seen (I was on vacation recently so I looked)
Especially since most of the good games are only on iOs
Which is kinda lame
re: android games
xcom enemy within is on android!
I think I'm bad at describing characters.
good characters are hard to summarize
So far the only thing we know about any character I've introduced is that one of them has wolf fur trim and a tooth necklace
well visually
also Data Wing is a very fun, very free android racing game
and I've introduced like, 3 main characters and a dozen background folks
just make sure to bring up that all your characters are pretty
maybe you could practice by describing characters that arent yours
what does hedwyn look like
whats his deal
Hedwyn stood in front of the reader, cute, I mean super cute, like I want to rub my face on his face cute. God that stubble burn would be great.
i think that describes you more than him 😛
isnt that what writing is all about?
Hedwyn looks expectantly at me, scrutinizing my expression. His ill-fitting t-shirt rises slightly, exposing his navel, as he raises his hand to wipe his brow. I want to be kind to him, but he needs to know the truth if he's going to improve. "You've oversalted this, Hedwyn."

:swoon:
@serene tulip This War of Mine mobile, Stardew Valley Mobile, Night of the Full Moon, Plague Inc, Rebel Inc, TerraGenesis
RE Length of writing: Don't worry about words or characters. A written work should be as long as it needs to be to tell the story in your voice. No longer, no shorter.
also, I'm scared of assigning genders to characters when I can get away with leaving it ambiguous
Also I feel like I'm incapable of doing anything without like, narrating it to a captive audience like a chatroom
or my room-mate
^For Oceloctopus.
Don't overthink it mate. 🙂
And don't feel bad for talking.
it's a way that we process stuff...
just got a spam email but i think they forgot to put the hoax in it
they apologize for contacting me, they tell me that the story is absolutely true
and that if i answer the email it will be really good for me
but there's no story
they didnt even promise me any money
anyone know of like, a writing discord?
also does anyone want to read like, 800 words and tell me what they think?
that sounds like a good amount of words for me to read
Just beat the Colosseum of Fools in Hollow Knight! I beat the ||God Tamer|| on my first try, but the aerial combat section bested me well over a dozen times.
great to hear about coming to steam!
Supergiant Games is an independent game developer in San Francisco, California. We created the games Bastion, Transistor, and Pyre.
I'm gonna start ordering beverages with two straws to counteract people with no straws
To counteract people who have started not putting straws in their drinks
Any comics suggestions?
what kind?
xkcd is super nerdy though, if you want something more humorous you should check out the perry bible fellowship
although it's a bit nsfw
Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal!
if u need some nerd, but more than xkcd stickfigures
I wouldn't know what comics to recommend without knowing your preferences/what you're looking for.
it's had cloud saves for a little bit now
pretty sure they have to be dev implemented still but idk
whoever thought that making the epic client white for the fez store page was a good idea should be removed from society
my eyes hurt now
i second this
laser cut vinyl clock?
You can use it for all the times, you know, not just 2:50
I havent been on this group in forever. I wanted to know who are the writers at supergiant so i dont miss out on the enxt Q&A?
@stiff pier you can check out everyone's roles at supergiant in #readme-first! its the most recent message. the next Q&A is probably going to be after the next big hades update
TFW half your party falls off of Titan's platform
feelsbadman
I may want the modern tarot arcana http://laysfarra.com/tarot.html
but I think it's sold out
I'm very unironically listening to classical music (Hollow Knight OST) and playing video games right now. Am I in a bad anime?
Maybe a decent anime
Bad anime usually don’t involve hollow knight or supergiant games
Quick, someone make a Dragon Ball/The Radiance AMV
I was gonna say a good anime. Bad anime don't have good/classy OSTs.

Unfortunately bad anime in fact do have good OSTs at times
Lotta potential racisms in that idea, walking on eggshells :/
Include the racism
Have it so that the real difference between elves and orcs is how they're raised, not their ears/tusks
and/or play it against itself
I don't know who I'd trust to do that right
I probably wouldn't even trust myself to do it right
But it's a neat idea
I just want to play lord vetinari but with like, campy DnD elves instead of creepy eldritch-being elves
I can't think of an anime that's largely seen as subpar/terrible by most people that also has a good OST, but that's just me.
Maybe some that have had endings that people hated and thought were bad... But that describes most shows.
I would be up for a game city management sim that directly explored racism if I had a very multicultural team of writers and developers.
(so not me, I'm white as all get-out)
I know a watched a couple
But I also cant tell you what they were
I just know they exist
Just like Sonic 06 had some amazing tracks
But was also Sonic 06
sonic 06 goat 😔
Jontron sucks!
Danny Avidanny is my one true love
i prefer arin with danny as well
arin with jon was.. way too much aggro
danny balances him out nicely
Guess they've been away from home for a while?
Man Jontron being a prick was so disappointing
I still love his old stuff but its kinda soured on me
he was funny but he’s such a nasty person
Basically
Though thankfully I dont like his new stuff anyway
So there is no dilemma there
yeah
I do still use some old clips of his because they are still the best clips for that situation, but Im trying to wind that down as well
I should have known when jontron’s parrot fell and he didn’t rush to pick him back up
Man, Astral Chain is getting really good reviews
Im not looking forward to having to wait for almost a whole month more
Speaking of things to make you rage: https://www.polygon.com/2019/8/26/20833141/ion-fury-steam-review-bomb-3d-realms-voidpoint-controversy
For heavens sake
Lets just check real quick that Im not interested in any of their games
yeah, make sure none of their games are on my wish list
Yeah doesnt seem that way
Theyre basically in the quake-like/doom-like niche?
As in original doom
Even their publisher doesn't seem to have anything in it that I'm interested in
Oh I was talking about the publisher
Unless I'm reading it wrong, it was just an easter egg right?
So unless the publisher has come out going, "we still support the crud out of these guys" I feel like they aren't really as culpable
I mean it being an easter egg doesnt make it less homophobic
Walking back on the promise to remove it does make them culpable
At least, assuming theyve got the means to pressure
yea but its not the publishers responsibility to micromanage all the studios they publish
Fair, but they already promised to do it
When they walk back on it is when it does make them partially to blame
I would be surprised if they published them again, but I think they realized it would look like censorship if they took it down
I think its likely that poor sales from the negative publicity will do that job for them
Im afraid you have more faith in gamers, especially in that niche genre, than I do
oh man
I just dropped that link in another gaming discord I hang out with
like a freekin' H-bomb
I'm such a bad person
Oh, its just that discord gets All Types, if you know what I'm saying
So I started an argument
oh dear
Oof
lol
a friend of mine just pointed out, "Between the 90s aesthetic and this 90s-brand homophobic humor I'm starting to think that the devs didn't really grow up much in the meantime"
ouch
I wanna create an indie game studio and make my modern gaymes so bad but it would be such a money drain
I want to make games too
Money doesn't have to be a barrier for games, friends.
Though given the environment, itll probably be a hobby rather than a job
Indie used to be easier before everyone started making games and the odds of even getting any decent exposure is slim
Join small game making communities to get eyes on your first dozen games
this is why marketing is important!! i went to an indie roundtable at gdc 2018, and the most common thing that came up from indies there was they regret not having begun marketing their game sooner
it's harder to stand out for sure but easier if you're proactive
The problem is that marketting is expensive
If youre not sure your game will sell even with exposure
Its a risky bet
Marketting is also a good reason to have money
ok so I'll start marketing as soon as I have 20 concept arts done then
(social media is free and a good start)
my older game was only bought by one person (a stranger, I think), but I couldn't even take the money out because a certain amount of earning was required before I could
I was marketing it on my old tumblr with 4k followers (I kept removing bots so they were probably legit)
ugh, that's the worst. youtube does that too.
you have to met certain thresholds both earning and channel-wise before you can get any ad revenue
The game scene (both Indie and and AAA) have always been competitive, but if you’re making a game for yourself, then why be concerned with selling it? Make games as a casual hobby for yourself and a few friends.
Probably how itll end up going for me
I lack the artistic talent to make indies good enough to break out, and I dont know any artists
Well, not personally anyway
Or I find a studio I can work in, but germany doesnt have many and theyre all in the wrong genres >.>
Your art skills will grow as you do! With time they’ll get better and better.
I'm not seeking to become a millionnaire through it but I do wish I can get enough revenue back to cover the expenses and put a roof on my head
No shame in having a day-job!
yeah seriously, anyone who tells you you're not a real dev if you don't work full-time is bad and wrong
no room for elitism here 😤
Its just a shame that most dayjobs are rather uh
oh I definitely will do it while having a day job, it's not a shame issue
Hm
Unpleasant over the long run?
Obviously it depends which one exactly but
Society hasnt yet figured out how to handle work
So youll be either wasting time or getting overworked most of the time
but doing double shift (day job then video game making) and also do my own chores proved to be very draining in the past
I'm making as many videogames as I reasonably can and I'm happy
(It's not that many)
The dream would be getting a small team at a big studio to make games
and I really need a team for the project that I want to make in the near future, I can't do everything by myself
@analog spear It might not be the publisher's responsibility to micromanage, but it is their responsibility to cut ties or make a very public declaration against the behavior.
Also, it's not censorship when it's your product. If you're a publisher, it's your product. It's like saying it's censorship for DAW books to not choose to print a hate filled manifesto. It's also not a free speech issue, because 1) It's not congress saying that it can't be there, which is the only goddamn thing the first amendment covers, and 2) discriminatory/hate speech isn't protected by the first amendment anyway.
/soapbox.
And Oce, if you started a huge debate, you did the right thing. 😛 Things don't change if they're not addressed.
Aint that a mood, sol
Even if I can get good enough at art, Id need to also get good at writing music
Which, given that I have neither education in musical theory, nor practice in doing so is tricky
At least this is easier to manage because I know people who make music
Personally, that is
if I get money for and from my games they will be used for paying more people to make more stuff
and regarding the taking money out thing, youtube is more like tapas, you start earning money after a threshold
If you guys want to find teams for game development, Twitter can actually be an amazing tool. My boss has done a lot of networking there.
but the money from the game I sold was an actual person paying actual money to me, but I can't take the money out and it's just stuck there
Games I want to make: A programming tower defense game where you program your towers to react to sensors to defeat invaders
A stardew valley game but with pokemon
A fantasy city sim
finding talents is relatively easy, finding money to pay them is harder
If I were to list the games I want to make, wed be here all day, but
Ive got 3 I want to prioritize
The ghost trick-esque cyberpunk game
A action JRPG where you code your spells and where you can more directly influence plot progression (The idea here is to have textboxes with sentence recognition rather than just a list you select from)
And a monster hunter-esque game where you play the monster
True enough sol, money really can be an issue. But once you get a potential team together, you can think about a Kickstarter. But sooooooo many Indie games start as side projects.
There are 3 more I wanted to do but theyre all different degrees of unrealistic
I mean, look at SDV. ConcernedApe did that crap out of his home office, by himself. UnderMine, which is blowing up HUGE right now, started out as just 2 dudes with a dream.
concernedape had a day job and did stardew after work true, but he had a supportive girlfriend who probably took away some of his housechores tasks
And Thorium, the undermine guys, have worked in the industry before
I like the second two a lot, UNO, and the JRPG thing blends in with my tower defense things
Fair. I mean there's always gonna be limits on how much you can do and how fast.
Plus the unfortunate truth is that much of it is ultimately luck
True UNO but that doesn't meant hey had huge gobs of startup cash.
They were shlubs before.
luck is only for getting it out there, making it is more slow grind, but the grind is a pay-to-go-faster thing
I really like the reverse monster hunter idea and Im confused noone ever made it before
what was it called
evolve or something
where you had a team of human hunters vs a big ol monster
The asymmetric shooter thing?
Yeah that was Evolve
Yeah
and one person played the monster
Its not quite what I was thinking of though
(Dying Light had that as a mode too)
there was a dungeon thing too like that
Hell I even have the name if I ever make that game, "Hunter Killer"
retro pixel art
few players play as humans and the other few players play as dungeon monsters and final boss
we technically can have that right now, but humans...
I mean... the scarcity we have now is a manufactured one, but yeah.
/agree sol
I actually like the idea of Yang's UBI, but I don't see it happening any time soon.
Not quite on a global scale yet
we totally can have it on a global scale, it's just this thing called greed blocking it
I mean if we were to redistribute the global wealth right now, itd be an average of 10000$ income yearly for everyone
Give or take
Actually I guess money doesnt matter in this context
The bigger problem is the actual resources
my professor for that domain illustrated it with the real primate behaviour of, if wealth is spread in a cage, the monkeys in there are fine and relaxed with it, but if the same wealth is piled into a defendable mass, then they start fighting over it
We can definitely reach the point where everyone has the bare minimum neccessities
and we humans are not so different: a spread out wealth is invisible, and a wealth that can be stockpiled, kept, owned, resold is protected like a dragon's hoard
But that would mean giving up on most tech
Then again Im sure I could explain my thoughts better if I still had the model before me
we absolutely do not need to give up on tech, we still require most of them for the distribution and information
high tech post-scarcity society is easier to make and maintain than a low tech one
We could definitely drastically improve upon the current state, but post-scarcity is still not achievable as far as Im aware
do you know how much food and clothing the industries throw out on daily basis
The only thing stopping us from having it is the people who have the power to create it not wanting to.
Oh yeah waste is a big deal
just our local fast food spots told us to over prepare ingredients and goods to guarantee reaching a sale threshold and throw away the rest
Some of that is logistics, you'd get some wastage no matter how you distributed it
the wastes can all be recycled
AFAIK most of the wastage starts on the farm
most just go straight to the dumpsters
where ugly plants aren't picked
It starts there, but it definitely doesn't end there.
Bruised fruit makes it to the grocery store and gets thrown away.
A lot of cities have industrial composting
at farm level, you can easily just bury the ones not picked into the very soil that grew them
I used to work for an outfit called Urban Gleaners.
to make them compost, and extend the soil's lifespan
I would drive around to grocery stores to pick up boxes of produce
and take it to homeless kitchens
Yeah, but how much of that, as a percentage, is the total food waste?
We estimated we solved about 3% of our local wastage.
That's 3% of what the local stores threw away.
People dumpster dive behind places like Whole Foods and New Seasons because there's plenty of edible food in their garbages.
It's just not pretty.
And that's only stage 2 on the path
Anyway it must be nice to be a rich kid
Able to work on their passions without any worry
it really is not, they pile up like small hills, a child can snowboard on it if it were snow
here, just a business like david's tea can throw containers that still contain perfectly drainkable tea and overfill 2-3 huge industrial dumpters
in a season change inventory cleaning
And write it off as "reasonable wastage"
I was really tempted to take all but it was too much, so I got only a few small bags
see, tea loses flavour after a few months, but it stays drinkable for years
Tbh, tea is kind of a luxury
but david tea was throwing them out before they even lose flavour, it was because of sale season change
I say as a guy who drinks almost exclusively tea
good reminder I'll boil some water and drink some too
I'm also not okay how in the front end, they tell us customers to buy reusable containers and come buy tea with same containers and get discount, but they themselves just throw away good containers instead of recycling
yeah sorry, it is a huge mixed bag
Yknow its hard to believe there are people who have their life together at 22
Not without EXTREME Privilege.
are you referring to corporate personhood or humans
Eh, for some its privilege, for others its hard work
I lack either relative to my countrymen
Actually no thats not fair
Even with hard work, it's privilege. The opportunity to be able to put in the hard work is, in and of itself, a privilege that not everyone gets.
My family is actually considerably above average
privilege is not just money, it's also the knowledge and network that comes with well off families
My perspective is skewed because the people around me are even better off
We dont have much of a network though
Immigrants and all that
yeah, immigrants tend to be lacking in both local knowledge and network
but no network stuff
Basically
Even then, my parents are both academics, so they still had an advantage all things considered, even if its mostly a genetic one
academics means a lot of knowledge too
Yes, but very specific knowledge
Mathematics are especially specific
I mean its good if Ive got to solve differential equations I suppose
Its less a requirement and more a bonus
calculator
That makes you more likely to be hired
The industries where a mathematical education is required is fairly small
math is not just calculus, it is also the logic and the interpretation
in almost all luxury careers you will have access to a calculator, so only a basic understanding is required
Calculators really dont help you with most math actually
And now something on a much more positive note: https://preview.tinyurl.com/y5wrchdr
Math is less about getting the results, its about getting the method to obtain the results
Its why youre allowed calculators in all math exams at my university, but half of people still fail
with stuff before calculus it does help, which is what most careers require
I suppose
Anyway, part of the reason Im unsure about what I want to do is because while Im certain I would enjoy game dev a lot more
Just working as a programmer or software engineer makes way more money
Which means financial security
Which means the ability to make games with considerably less stress
Truth. it's like 80 cents on the dollar or something.
On average. But that's also usually only taking into account wage slaves for AAA companies.
Oh Im unlikely to ever go Triple-A
Which isn't to say all folks at Indie studios are rolling in the dough. Far from it. But successful ones can make pretty decent wages.
not to mention programmer is one of the most in demand position in video game industry right now
I want to make games to create the games I want, but
I was interested in game dev for a while but I decided to keep it as a hobbies for now
Yeah the problem is being a successful indie is both hard and unlikely
Actually, hold on
Mh, probably unlikely
I realized there was one german indie studio that would be right up my alley, but theyre a bunch of close friends from what I understand
So the odds of them hiring anyone new they dont know is unlikely
Its the Crosscode devs btw in case anyone knows that game
they won't care when it comes to hiring for programmers
I mean its probably worth an ask
heck I need a C# programmer
I mean... there are quite a few indie german devs.
YAGER comes immediately to mind. Though they're closer to Triple-I status right now.
Ah fair.
Yager are, hm
Idk, I do play FPS every once in a while, but theyre not like my biggest thing
Im more of an action game guy, whether its third person or isometric
That's really just their latest project, and it's 3PS
Or wait, I think it's toggle-able?
Been a while since I played Cycle <.<
I mean, even if you work on an fps, you might not even be working on the shooting portion of it
Didnt they start out with Spec Ops The Line?
but if you can work on it as programmer it's still a rent payer job, the only ones who are forced to play games professionally in the creating part are the QAs
OH those guys
I mean the position Id want most is designer
Creating systems and numbers and models are more interesting than implementing them, to me
what about UX designer?
you do both, you design the overall look of the game and also help implement them
it's also very high in demand
It really depends on the size of the studio you're at too. If you're in a 3-10 person studio, expect to wear a LOT of hats.
I like hats
hats off to you then
But yes, obviously flexibility is important
ux has always been interesting to me
And I am studying Comp Sci to at least cover the programming part
Among other things
it's so nice to be young
don't forget to take a gym class to balance out the desky classes
As someone who (relatively) is I disagree
Its scary not having an idea how to become an independent adult
there is no such thing as independent adult though
we all in live a society
it's just that instead of depending on parents, one becomes attached to one or more peer (spouse or best friend or roommate)
and instead of getting main source of money from parents it's from an employer
or your own business
you'll always exist at the grace of somebody else's existence, and it's even more conditional as it goes
you are correct, but i don't think this knowledge makes figuring out how to move from being supported to working any better
besides you (hopefully) have along time to learn the ropes
my point is to don't stress over how you are not independent compared to X and Y
just learn as you go, we all do
aw man i'm really bad at that
look, society is far from perfect or good, but it does often plenty of support
I took me reaching 29 to learn that I can and will use employment insurance
before that, whenever I stopped working I just rushed to get another job or enroll in school
it really does give a good buffer so you can eat and have a roof above your head while you look for another, better job instead of hopping from one entry level job to next
In the US?
of course
here in Canada you make a phone call or submit a form on the internet, and then you're good for one year
looks like in the us it varies by state
Eligibility
You must meet the State requirements for wages earned or time worked during an established period of time referred to as a "base period". (In most States, this is usually the first four out of the last five completed calendar quarters prior to the time that your claim is filed.)
You must be determined to be unemployed through no fault of your own (determined under State law), and meet other eligibility requirements of State law.
