icy flicker
#

hello

serene tulip
#

I'm so sleep but I need to do stuff

novel peak
#

Yo is there a way for me to let the developers know of a copy cat game? Idk I feel like the game is breaching copy right and I was told that they might be take things like that seriously

mossy trail
#

youtube videos are always the best over an hour long

mossy trail
#

I've succeeded at making a somewhat normal pizza in a microwave!

muted smelt
#

making it....from the dough?

mossy trail
muted smelt
#

looks alright. it doesnt get crispy though right? could put it on stove for like 2 mins and get some crisp

mossy trail
mossy trail
#

I mean, not sure what crispy is in this context

muted smelt
#

like baked bread crispy

mossy trail
#

The dough gets fully firm and solid but like without any brown spots yeah

#

I put the dough in the microwave for like somewhere between 7 and 10 minutes with breaks and then add the rest(in this case pesto, tomatoes, jalapenos, cheese) and put it in the microwave for 2 minutes repeatedly until I'm satisfied with how it looks and smells

#

Also, dough is puff pastry

muted smelt
#

ah i see

mild pelican
#

haven't eaten homemade pizza in months

#

and usual delivery one for even longer

mossy trail
#

Pizza in pizzerias cost so much smh

mossy trail
#

does anyone know at which stage in development human babies start to feel pain

#

damn this question sounds weird

serene tulip
#

define pain

bronze lintel
#

Bread

mossy trail
serene tulip
#

define "attempt to stop them"

#

basically, I've been told when you use ether as an anesthetic, the body will still react to some stimuli even though the brain doesn't remember any of it

#

is that pain?

mossy trail
#

yeah

serene tulip
#

yeah, as in "that is pain"?

mossy trail
#

yes, the reaction does not have to be conscious in this definition I am presenting as per this question

serene tulip
#

well, to be fair, I didn't imply conscioussness, I implied rememberance. 😛

mossy trail
#

rememberance implies consciousness, does it not?

serene tulip
#

nope

mossy trail
#

hmm

#

ok that changes things

serene tulip
#

according to a cursory google search, parts of the somatosensory system start developing as early as 8 weeks, but I'm told by this site that the more complex pain responses don't show up until ~24 weeks

mossy trail
serene tulip
#

I honestly can't answer that, I'm not familiar enough with how memory works in the brain, I just know that I know that I consciously did things even though I can't remember them.

#

so, "reacts to external stimuli" is 8 weeks plus, give or take
"triggers the pain centers of the brain" is 24

mossy trail
#

interesting

serene tulip
#

"is something that will leave a significant lasting impression" is largely unknowable

#

but I'd wager its later than 24 weeks

mossy trail
serene tulip
#

Hmm

#

It would probably require folks to stimulate pain in a fetus and measure the stress hormone buildup in the fetus' system.

#

its hard to test, apparently, because maternal hormones affect the baby's hormone levels

mild pelican
#

i think human babies start to feel pain as soon as they realize they're born in third world dictatorship country

#

seriously though
i don't remember anything beyond 2 yo, even though there certainly were plenty of painful events

#

my parents were visiting a specialized clinic in Kurgan with me, but the only things that flash in the mind from that time is the train boarding

#

not medical procedures

mossy trail
#

my earliest memory is a guest's kid at my 4th birthday breaking my just acquired brand new fully metal tractor toy

#

and by memory I mean I have memories of remembering it but not of it itself

mild pelican
#

that's interesting

mossy trail
#

I don't have any bright memories like at all, all are kinda like shards basically

I think that high quality education that is also adaptable to individual quirks of anyone shouldn't just be available it should be enforced, being dumb isn't a human right
This message is brought to you by the idiotism of elon renaming twitter to x

That's why Peter the Great is the only cool ruler in Russia's history

rugged perch
#

i don't think enforcement of high quality education would've fixed him

at least it would make a significant difference

rugged perch
#

yeah, he would be a highly-educated villain instead of a dumb-ass villain

#

not sure that's an improvement

mossy trail

dumb villains tend to implode, also harming everything around them

rugged perch
#

smart villains tend to cause harm for generations to come

Elon doesn't need education to fix his issues, he needs years of therapy

rugged perch
#

ah, sucks when you have to sit through hours of discussions that are unrelated to you

#

i wish you no more meetings for at least two months

grave sand

As much as I appreciate the sentiment it is very much not that simple unfortunately

remote plover
# bronze lintel what do you folks do when angery?

I go to one of two methods. I'll either listen to really intense music and gradually tone it down to something softer and more pleasant (think metal music -> classic rock -> orchestral). If that doesn't work, then I'll pace and just try and think about how even though things are bad now and I'm angry, they could be much worse and I should be enjoying all the benefits on my life that are not so typical

#

As aggy said, just sitting with them and stewing on them doesn't really help, it just makes me focus on them even more

#

Option #3 is the classic getting lost in a videogame/book/other media and until I forget what was making me angry to begin with

mossy trail
#

Oh yeah distracting myself from very unpleasant feelings with various media is my top strategy I literally do it all the time

It really works for me because I forget easily

serene tulip
# bronze lintel what do you folks do when angery?

Im sorry for the late addition to this but this is a thing that I'm passionate about so I wanted to share
Step 1: ground if necessary, (find grounding techniques that are useful I like naming 5 things you can see 4 things you can hear, 3 things you can feel, 2 things you can smell, 1 thing you can taste(the last two you can switch)
Step 2: try and force a meditation session, close your eyes focus on the sensations that exist in and around you until your thoughts are quiet enough that you can notice them without getting caught up in them.

Hi all! Does any one have any good chicken soup recipes? I have a terrible cold, but still wanna try my hand at making some. (i have never made soup before in my life)

muted smelt
#

the best thing if its your first time might be a youtube vid

#

do you feel like a clear soup or a thick soup

zenith olive
#

Clear but either is fine, i just really want chicken soup

rugged perch
#

my go-to fast chicken soup recipe in short:

  • boil chicken drumsticks in salted water, occasionally removing the foam that might form on top
  • once the chicken has boiled, strain the water (it's bouillon now) into another cooking pot
  • chop and add the following vegetables to the bouillon : parsley (the root) or celery (the root), carrots, potatoes, onions;
  • put the bouillon and the vegetables to boil again
  • in the meantime remove the bones from the chicken legs and add the meat back to the bouillon
  • boil until the potatoes soften

spices can vary depending on preference and region; i like to add paprika while the vegetables are boiling, and to sprinkle with parsley (the herb)

but maybe it's best to do as Miko said and watch a video on it

#

the above recipe can vary a lot, but generally it comes down to:

  • boil chicken
  • boil some root vegetables in chicken water and throw the boneless chicken meat in there too
  • can maybe add noodles
#

it's really easy

muted smelt
#

you can watch this simple one and you can actually add anything you like to it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCkkSdLnYGo

my friend is trying to figure out how to name her character in LOTR Online.. the main options for now are Ruscien and Geilrian, but she is in doubt if the names are valid lore-wise

dusty rover
snow jungle
mild pelican
#

ok, i'll try to elaborate

#

well, there was initially a concept of character, with the full personality and red hair among other things.. and it turned out that in the game there's no option of bright red hair color

#

also, several other name options were already taken

#

initial concept, with some synergy with the name

#

and how it turned out

#

cons: there is only one official character with the name ending by -ien

#

so it's still questioned if the name is valid

#

this name has less synergy, but sounds better by itself

#

there was an option to change hair color to blonde, but then the character kinda loses personality

snow jungle
#

As for an elf, I would probably pick the the second, the suffix is more used in that part, it sounds more fitting.

And you are right, the character does seem to lose somewhat more personality with blonde hair

snow jungle
#

But then the point is, when reading the books, my imagination never tried to go as much into the detail as hair colour and since the history of elves is not yet completely filmed the hair color is pretty much up for interpretation

mild pelican
#

note taken, thanks c:

snow jungle
#

Also about the two different designs, the first one seems more like from Imladris and the other more like from lothlorien, but again since idk from which age the game is I can’t tell which would in the end make more sense

mild pelican
#

i'll re-send that to her

I don't really remember tolkien lore but just from what I remember ruscien would only sound elfish if it's pronounced like r-oo-s-s-ee-ehn with accent on ehn and not if it's basically pronounced like russian which it does look like from the first glance imo and geilrian doesn't sound elfish to me because geh is a more dwarf sound than elf and l is a soft consonant sound and r is an aggressive sound and soft consonant into aggresive isn't really elfy like there's only one name I remember that does that and that is elrond and he's half elf and there are many things in his character that play on that and imo that includes his name it sounds less elevated more human and aggressive

"Okay, wow, she’s saying a lot with this and I want to make sure it’s all stuff she wants. These are TRAGIC, TRAGIC PEOPLE. Both are from Gondolin, a formerly very very secret and isolated place that you would now need scuba equipment to reach the ancient ruins of. It was betrayed, besieged, and then totally destroyed 6500 years ago, and then 3000 years ago the piece of land it had been on got sunk. Like, incredibly bad and traumatic past. The group they’re part of would have gone on a terrible trek (edit: including such nice things as only being able to make it at all because there was enough smoke and steam to cover the mountains, having their leader kill and be killed by a Balrog) escaping their blasted city to a quiet river delta where they could do some slow healing of the soul, and then if they didn’t go West they’d have hung around near there in what became one of the last Elvish cities. And then variously helped out during the period we’re looking at now."

# serene tulip "Okay, wow, she’s saying a lot with this and I want to make sure it’s all stuff ...

so
considering the character, she is indeed the lady of autumn and animals (foxes included) among other things.. so name is more than just for the color. However, the initial idea was to call her Faraniel, but the name was already taken by somebody else..
Considering the city of origin, well.. Game doesn't provide lots of variants, especially considering it applies restrictions for appearance. Among other options besides Gondolin were Imladris, Nargothrond, Beleriand and Ossiriand.. and all of the cities went through some kind of disaster in one way or another.. well, maybe except Imladris.
Also, the character storyline itself includes such things as being stabbed by morgul blade and missing about 3000 years of the world history, so.. at this point tragic backstory is unavoidable

#

im trying my best to translate what she wants to say considering my brain usually go numb when trying to get into Tolkien lore and worldbuilding

But I definitely feel like that’s not always a correct statement

#

Like for example games that were under appreciated when they came out, and only garnered a cult following years after they came out

earnest cargo
#

Hot take if a piece of media would be considered bad if it released today it shouldn't be considered good because it's old
What prompted this thought if I may ask? Did it just pop into mind or was it brought up when discussing a particular piece of media?

rugged perch
#

yeah, i also want to know. i asked but no answer yet

earnest cargo
#

While I agree that despite a thing's age, it should be evaluated based on current standards and values, we should also take into account if it has positively contributed to the betterment of society somehow. Like it could be that in its time it was revolutionary, but now it's rather common sense or even out of date, but since it helped bring us to this point, it should be at least be given some credit.

all [old] is [bad] = false
some [old] is [bad] = true
some [old] is [good] = true
all [old] is [good] = false

rugged perch
mossy trail
rugged perch
#

why?

mossy trail
#

Because they're so similar

#

The books

rugged perch
#

which ones

#

also you latched onto the word breakthrough like that was the core message of my post

#

which it was not

rugged perch
mossy trail
rugged perch
mossy trail
# rugged perch which ones

Russian classic literature that I read, I don't remember the exact books, some gogol books some chekhov books some pushkin books also master and margaret although I gotta give them credit they're still good books by themselves(except gogol's) they're just mostly about how miserable life in russia is how corrupt the upper classes are how blind to that the lower classes are how selfish everyone is

sharp grail
# mossy trail Because they're so similar

its not russian lit, but i read some classics recently and not one of them had a similar structure or plot to the others. which cant be said about a lot of modern YA and romance books morganLUL

rugged perch
#

the accumulation of such opinions resulted in their expression in seminal books read by millions

#

which in turn affects culture and society

#

so yeah, circling back to what radish wrote

mossy trail
rugged perch
#

i think your definition of what is good is not entirely universal (in this discussion at least)

mossy trail
mossy trail
rugged perch
#

define a good book, please

mossy trail
#

by "good" I mean positive qualities of an art piece not connected to it's value

rugged perch
#

wha

#

ok, so what qualities are positive, for example

mossy trail
rugged perch
#

let's redefine all words

quasi badger
#

It's probably more useful to say "books I personally more enjoyed and was more impressed by". The historically-valuable stuff they force-feed you in schools is usually not among the books you enjoyed the most

#

All the while, they pretend that the "classics" are still the "best"

#

It's this pretense that irks some people including myself

rugged perch
#

the classics are the best... of their time period

#

indeed many are outdated or too heavy or hard to understand nowadays

#

doesn't remove their importance though

sharp grail
#

some of them definitely do still hold up

mossy trail
rugged perch
#

lol so you have a beef against language being used differently nowadays?

#

"why does Pushkin write in such a pretentious convoluted way smdh my head"

quasi badger
#

I think all would be excused, if plots were more interesting

mossy trail
quasi badger
#

Standard did go up with time, especially in the past century

rugged perch
quasi badger
#

True. We should be careful to always evaluate book quality and importance relative to their time

rugged perch
#

and if a book is timeless - well, gj to that author

mossy trail
sharp grail
mossy trail
#

Well, it's not like we don't remember of any bad old books because there weren't any

#

They're just lost to time because they're bad

#

Or not lost but nobody cares

sharp grail
#

there are so many books this applies to now

mossy trail
#

Yes and nobody will remember them either

rugged perch
#

well...

#

hopefully they won't be lost

#

bad books are still good to have

mossy trail
#

Also back then only rich and educated people could write books

rugged perch
#

as a whole for human kind, i mean

sharp grail
#

not everyone garners enough social media fame to advertise their books (which seems to be how it works nowadays)

mossy trail
mossy trail
#

At least money based marketing specifically

#

We live in an anti meritocratic world

sharp grail
#

how is it bad to advertise bc i dont get it

#

i am just hating on "booktok"

mossy trail
remote plover
#

Sorry but advertising is ads cracks me up

mossy trail
#

And the ones who can buy the most ads are the ones who have the most money
So there's an inequality when it comes to which books will be popular and rich people are more favores

sharp grail
#

there is a very big difference between a web pop up advertising a health loss programs and other such scams and advertising your art or writing

rugged perch
#

how do you reach people

sharp grail
#

shout out into space and hope your signal is picked up duh

remote plover
rugged perch
#

depends on the definition of famous

#

like if you hear that Sapkowski has a new book, you might buy it just because Sapkowski and his previous famous books

remote plover
#

Well generally the famous people in art and literature tended to do well enough to garner attention, and so advertise their later works

rugged perch
#

but if you hear that John Doe has a new book, you'd just... not care? who tf is that person anyway

rugged perch
remote plover
#

Like JK rowling had to go through several publishers before she was able to sell harry potter, but she was an unknown until the books did really well

remote plover
#

I'll be honest, I'm not a fan, but you can't deny they sold well

rugged perch
#

yeah, the classic example

mossy trail
rugged perch
#

they just make it sell

#

as that is indeed the purpose of marketing

dusty rover
rugged perch
#

it's the pinnacle of literature... of its time

mossy trail
rugged perch
#

it can still be a pretty good book though

mossy trail
#

It can also be absolute trash

rugged perch
#

example?

mossy trail
#

any of gogol works

rugged perch
#

why?

mossy trail
#

It's subjective I know

#

I just hate that specific writing style when half the page is about how puff the breasts of the maid are or something like that

quasi badger
#

Definitely subjective, and Gogol is a complex writer to boot. His early works were just for entertainment, but then he pivoted towards trying to make society better, believing it to be the duty of every writer

rugged perch
#

i feel that this whole discussion's foundation is queen_of_ingria's personal dislikes of certain authors, which undermines the whole debate

quasi badger
#

We could evaluate the writing style separately from the intended impact

mossy trail
mild pelican
#

i heard some modern historian/literaturologist take that Gogol was writing so much about evil beings bc he personally disliked God
so it might be personal

mossy trail
mild pelican
#

for legal reasons, it's a joke

rugged perch
#

as i keep saying, remember the context

#

nowadays we are flooded with imagery

mossy trail
#

As I keep saying forget the context bouldy

rugged perch
#

it can be tiresome to read pages of descriptions nowadays

rugged perch
#

because the context is crucial

mossy trail
#

It was a good book then it's not a good book now

rugged perch
#

for you

#

context is definitive for a lot of artworks of all media types

mossy trail
#

Yes I know that "good book today" is subjective, I'm not arguing against someone considering it good, I'm arguing against arguments in favour of it being good because it was good sometimes before

rugged perch
#

so you want it to be ultimately good forever?

mild pelican
#

i think i understand the issue

#

and issue are lots of old people who are just like "why do you read that foreign stupid books, our classics are way way better"

rugged perch
#

oh that's another conversation entirely

mossy trail
