Story where one of the characters has frequent amnesia but always hides it because they want to figure out whats going on themselves, like a puzzle.

#

"this here is Gerhard and he is a physicist who despite his frequent amnesia is the only one who knows the macguffin equation that solves our current emergency and we have to get him to the fancy lab in area 51 to save the world but our enemies are constantly hounding our every step"

"hmm yes, I have deduced that I am likely this Gerhard you are speaking of"

Good question

#

I guess it depends on the hero

#

If the hero is a not good person and i’m the villian opposing them i guess thats a different deal

#

But if its The archetypical supervillain probably the whole general taking over the world by force corruption thing

#

my moral compass is mostly not being a terrible person and quite a bit of supervillains fall under terrible people so

mossy trail
#

I think the villain creates the hero

#

There's no reason for a hero to be without a villain

#

And what type of hero it is depends on what villain you are

limber walrus

I still stand by what I said—a hero could be someone who does something extraordinary, not necessarily by fighting against even an abstract villain

dusty rover
#

well yes, but you also can’t have a hero without a conflict

dusty rover
limber walrus
mossy trail
# limber walrus I still stand by what I said—a hero could be someone who does something extraord...

For me it's the other way around, hero doesn't have to do something extraordinary what makes them a hero is that they're fighting the villain

Hero is fighting the villain

But villain is not, villain comes before the hero, villain fights for the cause, and then hero appears to stop the villain

And the "small heroes" who help a grandma cross the road or something they're also fighting the villain although it may not be a conflict that's why they're fighting the villain not resolving conflict, heroes usually initiate conflict, conflict with the villain, and villain is not a conflict villain is a danger or a problem

However villain is not always a conflict only if the definition of "conflict" or more so the depth at which we are using this term is superficial, because conflict is not just a direct confrontation of a person and a person or person and society. Conflict is simpler than that, conflict is something meeting an obstacle and the obstacle could also be something that met an obstacle in form of the first something, but not necessarily. So when someone can't get something from the top shelf it's a conflict, a conflict of their will to reach an object and object's out of reach position, will vs obstacle

# dusty rover oh wow, that’s fascinating. amazing how we’ve somehow settled on two Main Terms ...

The etymology of the various words for tea reflects the history of transmission of tea drinking culture and trade from China to countries around the world. Nearly all of the words for tea worldwide fall into three broad groups: te, cha and chai, present in English as tea, cha or char, and chai. The earliest of the three to enter English is cha, which came in the 1590s via the Portuguese, who traded in Macao and picked up the Cantonese pronunciation of the word. The more common tea form arrived in the 17th century via the Dutch, who acquired it either indirectly from the Malay teh, or directly from the tê pronunciation in Min Chinese. The third form chai (meaning "spiced tea") originated from a northern Chinese pronunciation of cha, which travelled overland to Central Asia and Persia where it picked up a Persian ending yi.

I mean, I'm not going to say that 16 ounces to a pound makes a lot of sense, I'm just saying that A) 12 is a very intuitive base to manipulate and B) we developed units based on the tools we had at hand.

#

I'm also not arguing that imperial is good

#

I just like thinking about the context that things were made

If more things than this one specific thing were 12 then it would be intuitive

serene tulip
#

Its really interesting to think about things like this though, for example, why is the word for the animal frequently germanic when the word for its meat frequencly romance?(see Cow/Beef) its because, or so I'm told, people who took care of the animals generally spoke germanic, but the people who led the culture on cuisine thought french was the best thing ever.

#

Metric is very much the measurement of scientists, whereas imperial is the measurement of the workers.

#

A gram of something isn't going to be that terribly useful in the kitchen, a kilogram of something is generally more useful but still not exactly a wieldy tool of measurement for cooking, but ounces and pounds are.

mossy trail
#

Wait how is a pound more useful than a kilogram

muted smelt
# mossy trail Also why is it called imperial I thought the whole united states thing was that ...

this was in 1790s. the world great powers at the time, france and britain were at war, and a large part of europe would be pulled into it and had to choose sides. the US were optimistic about france coming on top. but then those french people got crazy with their guillotine(french revolution at the time) and the US wanted to distance themselves from such radical idealism. so they thought, "we can't adopt the french's metric system, it'll send the wrong message about our stance"

serene tulip
#

its not more useful by much, but its a bit on the same scale of cooking stuff in the kitchen. I very infrequently need a pound of something but I need a pound of something a lot more than I need a kilogram of something.

As days go on the more I realize I don't understand concepts of caring, individuality and free will

fast marlin
#

and here we go again

#

alright im down for this what dont you understand lol

mossy trail
#

Why do people care about something that doesn't impact them and why do they care about their own ego integrity like uhmm they're afraid of becoming someone else

#

And free will is like so weird you think you can choose but you can't choose what you will choose

#

And people for some reason often don't care about others

#

It's like they don't realize that billions of people exist at the same time with them and to some extent all are impacted by their actions

#

I don't really understand do they "care" about anyone or just only think about their self image and their reputation and if they do care is it just because they think about reputation and etc but subconsciously and if not then is it some animal-like instincts and if not then what is it and why do they care

#

And how does individual exist as a concept if it's so easy to change a person to break them or restore them someone's identity is determined simply by where when and with who they existed and by their genetics and by what happened to them

#

All of humanity is just randomness

#

Humans don't exist

#

It's just a lot of simple mechanisms groups together

#

And there is so much mechanisms that are connected that they form a consciousness

#

Give a group of abstract immortal scientists a billion years and they will describe a human with equations

# fast pelican With ADHD, it's often that brown noise helps still your mind and focus you on a ...

For the ADHD stuff, I have a different audio thing than most of my friends, where I actually work better with lyrical music. In particular, I'll loop one song over and over for hours at a time to get into a hyperfocus zone.

I'll sometimes have a lot of audio input, but as long as I'm generally in control of it, I'm fine. Example playing D&D, I'll have whatever music the DM is playing, then my own separate music, and then everyone talking as we play. But if I can hear my roommate's music in the next room over, that starts overstimulating me very quickly.

personally, I see music in a similar way to meds, if it helps you cope and get through the day then it isn't necessarily an overreliance

serene tulip

the older they are the louder they sing

limber walrus

I'm actually fortunate that I don't always hear it, but I definitely do sometimes

Its weird because i can be in like a full city and be fine but if someone is existing in a quiet room i will hear them breathing and go insane

fast pelican
# limber walrus For the ADHD stuff, I have a different audio thing than most of my friends, wher...

No, I certainly agree with you that it's incorrect to say it's an overreliance - then again, to what extent is being on meds (even if genuinely non-addictive) from a very young age, is that technically not a dependence? I haven't yet been set on a medication course, and since ADHD relief options are not so developed here in the UK as much as in the US, how many such folks supplement their non-med time with specialised therapy and different coping mechanisms?

Also, Hmmm, I do often put on lyrical music (usually rock/metal) when I'm doing exercise or playing games - aka, anything I don't have to focus on fully, that I've done before often.

#

But I can't multitask very well with stuff I'm not so experienced with, and doubly so with conversations with more than one person.

finite goblet
#

I hate being dependent on my meds

#

I once tried just cutting them off and I got obliterated mentally

fast marlin
#

yeah i get that

fast pelican
#

This is where I feel I'll have a bit of an advantage starting off at 25, because it's easier to build a balance when you're not so deeply shaped by an experience.

limber walrus
#

And NT people do additional things to handle stressors as well, so coping mechanisms aren't just an ND thing either

fast pelican
#

Thanks Swan.

#

Has anyone else here grown up with family members or parents who also had an impairment of some sort?

#

What I've learned from personal experience is that not making an effort to balance oneself and managing symptoms can make it very difficult to live with someone who's also impaired, especially if they've also got ADHD like yourself. It even breaks relationships if it goes far enough.

Thankfully this newer generation has much more help in this regard. I certainly feel bad for the things my mother went through, and that it's hard for her to take a turn in her near 50s now.

I love living through the philosophical turmoil that's come from AI generated art

#

Humanity is being forced to learn a tough lesson about itself and it's fascinating

fast pelican
#

Practicing art myself, I'm not so worried it'll take over the art industry - or that there won't be a demand for digital art made by human hands. There's so many subcategories that would be difficult for AI to replicate at present.

#

I also see this pattern historically, where when you have something new that people think will be the end of the world, it instead ends up integrating itself quite positively in the world. Conversely, there's been many "this fad will never catch on" moments that have ruined more than one individual or industry.

mild pelican
#

AI still can't draw hands, so people will be still needed

#

(not every human can do it tho)

muted smelt
#

AI are writing novels too

#

a friend whos majoring in english takes it very hard

fast pelican
#

@muted smelt as a writer, all that makes me think is that an AI will either create something that is unintelligible, or it creates very solid Cookie-Cutter stories - what's missing there is a certain human imperfection that marks all good literary works, even if it's only a lack of insight.

#

That said, if they massively gain in popularity at some point in the future, well screw me I guess - just had to be born in the best decade do aspire to be both a dedicated writer and artist.

But to hell with it. I'll still do what I do because of what it means to me personally. And these works would have been created by someone who lived in these times.

muted smelt
#

its true that ai won't get things right. but they seem to be very strong co-writer. they can easily spit out a(or however many) very rough draft for a human to edit into something good

fast pelican
#

Then it's the same as ever - only the most well crafted and innovative manuscripts will make it past the publishers.

#

The very convoluted and broadly scoped world I've been prepping since 2015 is simply too complex to be churned out by AI since it combines dozens of ideas in really roundabout ways that fit the themes and style, all stuff that comes out of my unconscious during the night more often than not.

mild pelican
#

in the XIX century ppl were absolutely sure that machines will take away their jobs for good
but here we are, there are still workers whose only job is to sit and lay things from one belt to another

#

i think, when AI will be truly creative and will get rid of any flaws in its works, it will take so much time and power, it will still be cheaper to hire an artist/writer

#

also, somebody will have to make it work anyway

#

in the end, it's still human who decides what result is the most correct

mossy trail
#

AI can't make something itself

Only if you tell it what to do

And it can't make something original

mossy trail

Why are people so mad at them souping the painting

#

Like they obviously knew it's behind a glass

#

If they wanted to damage it they would break the glass and tear it or something

tall owl
#

Besides the obvious discussion about what kinds of protest are ‚acceptable‘ (which will always happen no matter the protest), I‘d say it‘s not that obvious it‘s protected by glass; most normal oil paintings in galleries are not protected by glass, and while the sunflower painting isn‘t that unknown, it‘s not that famous for people to immediately think of the connection. And fueling the discussion is also the disconnect between the object of the protest and what they‘re protesting against

fast pelican

Thankfully the majority of fine art is so niche that most wouldn't think to vandalise it to make a point.

Also iirc those people are funded by an oil baron.

serene tulip

seems debatable, looks like the only links they have is Aileen Getty who inherited a lot of oil money, but as far as the jerusalem post is concerned isn't directly involved in oil unless particularly "Undercover"

Would be pretty epic if she actually uses inherited oil money for climate activist purposes ngl

seems like one of the few ethical uses of that money

@feral chasm forgot heirs. And by my understanding you actually have to put effort into unwinding the wealth from the mechanisms that gather more of it for you. Sure you're complicit in the actions of all the companies you've invested but the wealth managers and accountants largely keep you making more money without you having to do anything about it. Think about some of the great US heirs, billionaires who are also idiots

I'm curious about the stats on this - given current population metrics, do we produce more than what is required to sustain ourselves comfortably.

Whether it's food, fuels to power our homes and transportation or the things that make us happy, do we truly discard more than we should? It certainly doesn't seem so from what I've seen among the middle and lower bands of the population (and in a "rich" country at that).

feral chasm
#

You wouldn't see it among them because the issue is mostly at the distribution level. Rich people who'd rather waste food than let a poor person have it without paying.

serene tulip

I remember talking to a republican coworker of mine about how it's projected that total healthcare costs would drop in the US if it implemented a single payer system, and I basically got told straight up that they're OK paying more for healthcare if it means that other people will be excluded from it.

blissful charm

not being a nihilist doesn't mean "doesn't want to live," not being a nihilist is like, what i do in the Universe matters, what i do with other people matters, my actions matter, i matter. sometimes life is so, so, so incredibly awful. but that doesn't mean it doesn't matter.

#

i was a nihilist in my early-mid 20s because i was miserable and couldn't reconcile there being such immense pain with a Universe having any meaning. but pain doesn't stop things from meaning things, pain doesn't stop the possibility of joy. nothing is painful forever in the same way nothing is joyful forever. things get better and things get worse. and no matter what, they matter.

finding a good PT seems to be difficult in general. it can also depend on the condition you have. for my condition, i need dry needling and phyiscal manipulation, and not a lot of physios do that here

i also need TENS therapy, apparently, but finding an appropriate TENS device here isn't as easy as it is in the philippines, ironically, so when i next go back to the philippines i might book a physio appt there
