After listening to Supergiant Games music, for a time afterwards I always feel like the music in other games is a bit lesser. Even ones with really bumping soundtracks like say Persona 5. Just because of how exceptionally beautiful Supergiant is at mixing, layering, syncing and incorporating their music into the game. The music doesnt exist alongside the game its part of it and for a moment I feel like how its such a shame other game studios dont have their own Darren Korbs.

Stuff like what the dialogue was, who said it, where, that kinda stuff. The more specific it is the faster they can track it down.

Logan sells himself so short I feel. In my opinion, his voice acting is what made Bastion, and by extention, Supergiant. It's definitely what made me love their work. But he usually says that he was just there, in the above video he says he was close, cheap, and did his friends a favour.

But knowing Pyre's soundtrack and the range Darren has shown before...I can only imagine how much strain he has to put on his voice to sing an entire song falsetto. Cuz trust me, I've tried to sing falsetto as a baritone. It's not easy. (And tenor 2 is the worst place to be, imo. Too low to hit real tenor notes, too high to hit any bass or at least baritone notes.)

(Oh, and sorry for the singing nerd stuff. My parents met in a choir and my mom even sang when she was pregnant with me. It runs quite strongly in my blood.)

I asked about this on a Q&A, and Jen said that their engine uses textures that can be scaled and transformed arbitrarily. When I replayed Transistor afterwards, it was easy to spot a lot of places where this was probably helpful

My understanding is that they can basically just paste a texture onto a wall or floor, and then stretch each dimension of that texture by whatever coefficients they want. They can layer multiple textures on top of each other, so with only a few dozen textures, the artists can combine them into a ton of different patterns.

You'll see that this floor has a lot of repeated images, but they're all scaled to slightly different sizes, and oriented differently, and some have other textures layed on top of them.

This makes iteration on the actual level design simpler, because they don't need to redo an entire floor's artwork in order to change its dimensions. They can just make minor changes to the layout and orientation of its textures to accommodate the changes.

I'd say Bastion, Transistor and Pyre (and Hades) all have a distinct SGG mood but they're also pretty distinct - watch a trailer each to see which one's for you? And/or go by genre. Bastion is action, Transistor is action/strategy, Pyre is visual novel/arcade fantasy sports game

@paper pecan Glad you'll be checking out Bastion! Yes, Darren does all of Super Giants music since their first game. If anyone is singing, it's either Darren or Ashley doing it. After Bastion honestly I'd suggest just playing them in order. (so transistor next) You can see how SGG has evolved overtime while keep some similar themes in play style and mechanics. Also Pyre is just really hard and different from all their other games so I would save it for last.

That interesting! I found Pyre had a steeper learning curve in general simply with how controls were oriented

Games like Bastion and Transistor I ended up with the difficulty level amped up the farther in I got of course, partially to keep it interesting and partially just because I do love getting those shiny achievements, But I felt they were easier to get a grasp on from the start.

transistor's combat was the hardest for me to "get" at the start, but even that is fairly simple and surprisingly indepth once you get into it

I've never tried a gamepad with a sgg after bastion just because it felt so weird after using keyboard for so long, but I might try that next time I replay Pyre then. For transistor I absolutely loved the mechanics. I don't remember how quickly it took me to understand them. I loved though how they encourage all the different uses of the add-ons by linking story to using them, and the balance between strategy and real time action was really cool.

I can see Pyre being easier with a gamepad for sure. I still thought it was fairly easy on standard, but when I tried switching to hard it was too much. Then the titan stars came into play, and using them struck a really good balance between the two difficulty levels imo. I do want to eventually try harder playthroughs though.

Also, hi. 😛 I just played Pyre for the first time a few days ago and it broke me emotionally.

I should probably move to the Pyre channel for that though.

Yes!

I had to do this myself

So because it’s a 3rd party controller, it doesn’t come with its own drivers. You’ll have to go to the Microsoft website and install their drivers for an Xbox 360 controller. Then go into your devices settings, find the rock candy controller, and manually assign the Microsoft drivers to it. That should get games to recognize if for what it is.
