There was a big explosion of fandom for Pyre in the year and a bit between its release and Hades' early access

I think there had been a lot of love for Bastion and Transistor, but they both had skeleton casts and there wasn't much to get your teeth into, fandom-wise, aside from discussing the endings and exchanging theories on how Cloudbank and the Transistor worked

so there was pent-up fandom energy and then SGG handed us this sprawling cast and world, which were catnip for the kind of fans who get into that, and we all went hogwild digging through the game text and working out backstories and lore

It's a very niche game.

It's arguably the better whole experience than either Transistor or Hades, but it's so damn niche that I won't fault people for not playing it or recognizing it.

I put my finger on A Reason why I like Jodi and Pam so much

They start out so hostile, but they don't, actually, hate each other?

They are hating past each other without realizing it

Jodi's kneejerk reaction is Harp!! 😡 and she has a hell of a time backing down from that, she's stubborn as a brick wall

and Pam's first impression of her is "oh great, another hate-filled soldier like my sister who will never ever change" and she falls straight into the habit of needling her in the assumption that she never will change her mind about her

and neither of them is actually looking at the other for who they really are

But circumstances force them to work together and Pam realizes it first and just, refuses to give up, even as she's shoving her foot in her mouth, she just keeps coaxing and cajoling and teasing and pleading, until Jodi finally cracks and goes, Fine. Fine. This changes nothing. But fine.

And something about that just makes me grin.

I wish they'd done like one more substantial scene than they did, with them getting to know each other after that crack in the armor, that moment of Pam opening up a little and Jodi allowing it

There's small stuff, here and there (chilling behind the wagon together in the credits!!) but...just one more Dedicated Scene...fill that arc out, Greg...!

I like that they always try to encourage healthy relationships and even characters who got off on the wrong foot begin to realize that they allowed their preconceived ideas to cloud their judgment and warm up to each other. And the best thing is that it happens gradually, because realistically relationships develop over time instead of changing overnight.

One part of the game that I really want to talk about is how the game actively gets harder, the more you start liking your characters.

Like- gameplay wise you usually gravitate toward your favourites like for me that was Hedwyn, Pamitha and Vagabond girl. So you play as them and level them up. But you also want them to ascend. So when you are having them ascend, you are activelu gimping yourself- as one of your most leveled characters will be leaving your party for good.

And I love it. It creates a dilemma where you might keep someone down in Exile for longer for selfish reasons like gameplay or getting to interact with them more- and only your three most enlightened characters may compete in a liberation rite.

It's genius design and I wanna' talk more about it.

It challenges the player on different levels. The only game to do the same thing to me was Pathologic 2.

Not only do you have to do heavy moral choices, but also you are not rewarded for selflless ones. ||Bar intercations, which are a reward themselves but still.||
It's something I adore. Your choices have real ingame, and out of game consequences.

Yes you just freed your favourite character- but now you have to find someone else to take their place in the Rites.

They cannot be replaced.

The choice to free someone is heavy.

And I love it.

That is what makes it so genious.

You are freeing someone because you as a player, care for those characters.

And that is a sign of good writing.
