There's a lot of work involved right before and after launch, you don't want to do that on Friday. If you launch Thursday and something goes wrong you have entire Friday to release fixes, rather than having it be broken the whole weekend, first weekend being when the most purchases/players are. It also gives people time to download it over Thursday evening.
