White is a really bright and harsh colour, so it causes eye strain if you're staring at it 24/7 while* trying to draw
White as the background will also make all your colours appear way darker than they actually are
So it you do decide to change the background later you'll have to basically reedit all your colours and shadows to be less intense lol

I mostly just tone mt canvas for digital art though because I do it for my physical canvases and papers too lol. A "neutral" grey toned background makes it way easier to judge values
Especially if you have a more realistic or painterly style
Sometimes bright colours for the background as a base too though
Like say you're drawing a waifu enjoying the sunset
If you make your atatying canvas a reddish colour it'll make it easier for your brain to figure out which shading and highlight colours would work best in that environment

You can try a multiply layer using the skin color, and some hints of purple in the darkest areas using an air brush !!
Or hints of blue, depends on your preference imo
But you don’t want it to be super saturated, usually the purple / blue should be leaning more towards the gray area of the color wheel

The way I do it is I
Start with a sketch and
worry about the line art later so I won't make myself feel restricted, I jump straight into coloring
using the sketch as a Guide, Put the base color (much preferable if you start with a darker tone of the said color)
Add another layer and clip it on the base color then
Apply a lighter tone of said color
Add the lighting on a different layer
Then the shadow
After you're done with these steps
Using the eyedrop tool
Copy the darkest color on the part of the hair you want to color

I try to draw her more similar to her Golden Conductor skin. I've got more work on this. Like the hair needs some work still. The face needs an adjustment. And her chest needs to be made a bit smaller.
I always end up drawing her more mature looking than she typically appears in her base skin. For better or worse
