Now that I'm sitting around top 1000, I'm starting to struggle a bit more -- but I think that may be due to my gear / levels, since their total power usually exceeds mine.

Total power is a fair indicator but not the end-all. Once your squad establishes what they're good at (typically the formations are "alpha/nuke early", "main does all the damage while vanguard decoys", "in-between"), once your ships go over level 120, once you start getting the right gear... And then begin to +11 them... You're very far into the PvP rabbit hole.

Again, generally speaking, fleets that are built to mainly defend have low Total Power, but can be just as dangerous as those built to nuke early. (And some ships, while not powerful, have inflated Total Power contributions ||Prinz Eugen being the poster child for that||.)

As long as your squad is getting wins, even if they're not on the community tier list, it's all good.
Eventually you'll want to supplement your go-to ships with meta-voted ships (if you can). ||No one's going to say 'NO' to NJ, even though players have proven they don't need her to win Admiral of the Navy.||
