You only get ranking points from winning. You get merits from winning and less from losing. It's still better to use all your exercises and lose some matches than overcap as a newer player, since you want the merits to buy bulins.
If you use all your exercises and don't overcap and win every battle, you'll easily end up in top ~300-600 depending on how many times you picked the left-most option/got bonus points for being far enough behind your opponent.

Exercises aren't mutually exclusive with any of those things. It's a completely separate game mode that gives free exp and currency to buy stuff. And yes, new players absolutely need a lot of bulins. One of the most common issues new players have is they're using ships they don't have the bulins to be using.

your score gained is calculated by the difference between you and opponent
so the lower you are, and the higher the rank of opponent, the bigger your score gained
of course, this require some tactical refresh
but this is really only to be done for t10 players
if AotN is all you want, just keep winning
you can even lose some, but you gotta do your pvp quick on the last day

- Rank 1000-1500 is the range of the tryhards who overcap and they put in strong defense fleets thinking it will help them rank higher, instead of being active and not overcapping. People in the top ranks usually realize the defense fleets are pointless and instead meme with them or use it as a trophy showcase for their oathed ships. And they want people to pass them in rank so they can get more points.
