@jagged lake thoughts on the Sony a6000?

jagged lake
#

Really great starter camera :)

#

Has the same sensor as my Sony a77ii, which I took the car photo above on

#

And this

#

Lens matters more for quality but the sensor is REALLY good and it’s a great cheap camera with plenty of features

junior gale
# elder ingot <@709404300014649414> thoughts on the Sony a6000?

like beano said, it's great. i use the a6400 and love it, i haven't done a deep dive on the specs but typically with these incremental upgrades the older you go you have fewer autofocus zones and other quality of life things like that. but the quality of photos will still be stellar.

in the 6000 lineup you don't get in body image stabilization until the 6500 and imo that's one of the bigger upgrades. with the a6000 tho you can just get a lens with stabilization if it is something that you need (not necessarily the case).

elder ingot
junior gale
#

there are some long-recommended lenses from sigma that would do you quite well, depending on what you'll be using it for

elder ingot
#

And maybe getting pictures of cars too. I just wanted something better than the camera I have now (which I need to sell)

jagged lake
#

Stabilization will matter with long lenses

#

250mm and up roughly

junior gale
#

yeah, and if you plan to do video at all with longer lenses it will also help with that. it's a massive help on the 70mm (105mm equivalent) lens that i use.

#

plus any sort of longer exposure will benefit too, which if you're doing night time shots likely will come up

narrow pollen
# jagged lake 250mm and up roughly

My experience is 200mm with an APS-C sensor (about 300mm in full frame) is a bit of a challenge handheld so blimey you have that description dead on.

junior gale
#

this can definitely be the sort of thing that you test and upgrade when you determine you need it, rather than chasing the ultimate/perfect/ideal, but don't be surprised if it does turn out to be of benefit for you

narrow pollen
#

Stabilization can slightly help with darkness as well as you can push the exposure that tiny bit longer than without stabilization.

junior gale
#

the one regret i have is that i really should have just sprung for the 6500 when i upgraded last, lol

narrow pollen
#

Personally, I went the no-stabilization route with sharp and open lenses (f1.6-f1.8), not a lot of distance, but can handle dimly-lit churches like a champ. I am a bit sad that I can't do long-distance nature stuff well, but... I accept that limitation. So it does depend on your use cases.

junior gale
#

absolutely

narrow pollen
#

When I upgrade, it'll probably be either to a a6700 (IBIS plus the bigger battery, though with some overheating reported) or the a7CR (full-frame, IBIS, tons of room to crop photos due to a massive sensor). But I'm in no hurry. The whole a6000 series is great, with maybe a a6800 or similar coming up later this year or next year.

elder ingot
#

How much should I sell my old camera for anyway. It's a Canon PowerShot SX something or other, I don't remember the exact thing off the top of my head

junior gale
narrow pollen
#

The problem is, a6700 is already much thicker than the rest of the a6000 family, and at that point the a7C series isn't much different in form factor (C for compact, the viewfinder is at the top left corner).

junior gale
narrow pollen
#

The MPB and Kamerastore online places are also decent ways to find what the 'typical' price of a used device is. If you do sell a camera, be nice and include the shutter count in the posting.

elder ingot
narrow pollen
#

It should be written somewhere on the device, probably under it or maybe in the Settings -> Device info. Or in the pictures' metadata.

#

By metadata, it is easy to check if you have a picture taken with it. Just open it and check file info:

elder ingot
narrow pollen
#

At that point, just check if there is something written under the camera.

elder ingot
#

The metadata on my phone says what the shutter count is when I take a picture

#

Maybe, idk

#

Not sure

paper bear
#

For a starter cam id definitely go with the a6400 or a7iii

#

2 super common and reliable camera bodies

#

Just depends if you wanna film or take pics

#

Low light id probably go with a full frame sensor though

elder ingot
#

Also how much are both of those

#

Give me USD

narrow pollen
#

The prices can vary wildly, depending on whether you are willing to take used or grey market or are purchasing new. For example, a grey market brand new a6700 can be below 1100€, but an official local retailer wouldn't let it go below 1600€. That's like a 30% difference depending on whether you want a reliable warranty or not. a6400 would be cheaper than that, but still about 900-1000€ in official retailers, a7m3 probably around 1800€ or more even though it is two generations old now. American prices in general I think are a little lower than € prices in official retailers, grey market (mostly imports from Japanese market, sometimes need a language setting change) stuff I have no idea about in the States.
As for official retailers, sometimes the cameras are cheaper with a lens than without one, bundle deals are something to keep an eye on. Like, I've seen official retailers sell a bundle cheaper than body only, so even if the lens is crap, you're still saving money (+ you could sell the lens later though probably quite cheaply).

#

Notably, a6400 doesn't even have a backlit sensor nor IBIS (I don't know a7m3 so well), so darkness can be an issue, but honestly SONY is pretty darn good with darkness. I have basically the same sensor in my ZV-E10 and the main constraint are some extremely dimly lit churches or caves where I need a lens with an aperture wider than f2.8, meaning I have to switch to a prime lens instead of using a zoom. The vast majority of places, no sweat.

paper bear
#

Also have to think about resell price once you upgrade. Lower shutter count = higher resale price

narrow pollen
#

Which is funny since using the electronic shutter does increase the count, but doesn't really wear down the mechanical shutter that much. :p

paper bear
#

Yeahhhh but fully silent shutter does cause distortion when you pan, especially if the sensor readout speed isnt fast enough.

#

EFCS is what most people use

#

Would probably count as 1/2 the wear as full mech

paper bear
#

These are sold items on ebay

#

My dad got his a7iii for $700usd on Facebook marketplace but for you id reccomend buying from somewhere where you have buyer protection

narrow pollen
#

I use silent shutter because usually when I do photos I am either around people or birds, either way I don't want to be noisy or attract attention. And I just... don't pan during photos. 😄

narrow pollen
#

The stock a6400 price feels a little painful. Compared to a ZV-E10 it has the benefit of a viewfinder, but can't be used as a webcam as easily (via USB). And a brand new ZV-E10 can be had for less than 700€.

paper bear
#
