Hello, I'd like to talk about this a little.

It's important to consider that these rules have to encompass a wide variety of situations whilst also being very concise in order to make sure people will actually read them before using our server. The more detailed we make each rule, the more long-winded the rules page becomes, and the less likely people will bother reading them at all. On top of that, a lot of troublemakers like to nitpick on rules that don't expressly state a certain thing, and of course we can't list every single specific behaviour that we don't want here.

It's also important to consider that the current hacking situation is very atypical - for the vast majority of the game's lifetime, the subject of hacks has almost always been either the off-hand mention of hacker encounters in a lobby (which is allowed), or people specifically talking about the actual hacks themselves (which is not allowed) - a very simple line to discern what we allow and what we don't. It's comparatively very rare that there is any middle ground between those two, such as the current situation where there is a co-ordinated effort to disrupt the game and the reasons behind it. As such, I can only hope it's understandable that it can be a bit tricky for us to figure out exactly where to draw the line with extended discussions given it's not something we typically have to deal with.
With that being said though, we do appreciate when people discuss things like this respectfully and civilly, and if you (or anyone else) believes that there was a misjudgment on a moderator's call, we specifically have a Slothmail entry for people to reach out to us to discuss it. The tickets are visible to all mods meaning that we can all review the situation, see if anything needs to happen, and discuss it together with you. (Although please also understand we're volunteers and are absolutely inundated with tickets right now so it may take some time to get to each ticket.)

I don't think any of our mods intentionally go out of their way to shut down discussions on purpose, but I'm also not going to suggest that we never make the wrong call, or that our rules are flawless and rock-solid. I just ask that you keep in mind that we are volunteers, sat between the developers and many many people who all have their own opinions and frustrations and when they come here to express those opinions and frustrations, we're often on the receiving end with no ability to actually address their problems but we do have to take the heat when we have to enforce rules, regardless of if it ends up being the right call or not. Ultimately we're just trying to keep the server clean and friendly, and we may err on the side of caution sometimes but we're willing to discuss it and talk it out to find a satisfactory middle ground.
