I just checked match history of someone using it and it does give energy exactly 50% of the time. When he’s in the top team in the match replay he gets energy and when he’s in the bottom team he doesn’t.

Rosa has a similar bug where her target defaults to highest combat rating when she’s on the bottom team in the match replay, even if you’ve set a target for her in your formation. It has to do with how the game simulates the matches; it seems like they make ai copies of our teams and that causes weird interactions sometimes.
