I think the reading into the npc's text lines are quite clear on two things, they're there to be read and they tell you "just flow with it". But I also saw a comment in gen-chat recently that said, this game punishes you for your mistakes. Aka not being able to delete chars or respec easily

but when he introduced pepsi vending machine, they had 4 choices

which got them sales up, for both drinks, it's very interesting study, and it's old almost 40 years now
and the more options you introduce - customer is more willing to buy one, that's why we have so many options in modern games now
imagine if you only had an option to buy a time candy or not to buy it
but if you introduce 60 other options, people usully tend to buy SOME option
it's giving them an option to WAGE what's good for them, or what they think it's good for them, and it goes from: "buy or no" to "buy what's better"
it's simple as that, and, again, has nothing to do with gamification, but looks like we're going broad here 😄

ahh that is actually a very interesting study, I actually have my own idea to this that is slightly different from the initially proposed conclusion. tldr to that is that it's actually more brand loyalty than additional choices that creates the additional demand.
Though the split between the options isn't exactly the engagement component per se; but it does feed into it, as being able to capture attention with 1 is already substantially increasing likelihood of retention; so similarly, it doesn't boil down to "what is better", and just "do I see one that is good"

So naturally I'm already mad at Baba Yaga, got in there with my archer, ready for my first noob kill, spent 11 minutes not getting stepped on and getting rid of 3/4 of their health.

THEN I have to move to avoid being stepped on and when I try and click back on the boss to attack it, it turns out it is in FRONT of the portal, I cannot see the portal at all, but boy howdy, the game sure can!
And man, obviously you WANT portals to have priority, right?!? So that was 11 minutes wasted on the boss.

You're probably not wrong, but the way the game levels are laid out and the timing of when the quest is given to you (super early), I guess it might explain why only 20% of players ever get to level 40.

That one isn't consistent. If you screw up on the space bar, it keeps you there until you hit space, unlike if you screw up mid-word it just puts the wrong letter and moves on to the next character.
Or if you hit space mid-word because you got off and thought you finished, it doesn't put the space, it makes a noise and you have to hit a letter rather than space to move on.
