This is simply the nature of the gaming skill. Whenever you get a new nugget, new snail level, new artifact tier unlocked, etc., you'll find yourself able to progress much quicker than normal and invest into new upgrades. But once your upgrade costs have caught up to your new bit multiplier, it will slow down again. Gaming is very feast/famine in this regard - this is very typical and to be expected. Just keep chugging along.
