2 tips:

1 - text mode
2 - failsafe. Turn it on , throw it on the ground. It'll automatically respond if there is a spirit box ghost within range automatically.If it doesn't detect any proper questions being answered. Usually about once per minute.

I know, i know... It's extremely frustrating , and they should know better, but these are some work around that you can use temporarily until they fix it

Alternatively, try using global chat (not local) and try singing your questions.

The best thing I can honestly tell you is as a low level player.Just play the game as intended. Get three evidences guess to the ghost and leave.

It's all about maximizing your x p per hour. Once you start getting into more higher difficulties, professional nightmare custom, you can pick the type of game difficulty that you can complete more consistently over a course of an hour.

Just leave.

Take whatever media and objectives you've completed and leave.You don't have to guess to ghost to make money. It's better to leave with just a few objectives completed than die , trying to figure out what the ghost is waiting for that final piece of evidence.

Originally , i think they did , and it was what gave you the tiny amount of personal illumination , so you can see in the dark when you bump up to objects. But it wasn't like an actual flashlight.
