I can usually figure out the ghost on professional before a hunt so I feel like I'm getting it, but depending on how many jump scares the ghost has given me and what other objectives I need, I just leave as soon as I figure it out. I'd like to get better at evading the ghost during a hunt to learn the hunt mechanics better. At this point I still feel like 80% of the time if they hunt I'm dead.

You don't need to wait until it's breathing on top of you. But if you want to be sure, you can light the smudge and run through it.

Ok, I think my pulse has returned to normal where I can type. That last run (solo) I was on tanglewood in professional. I already narrowed it down to hantu based on evidence. One of my objectives was to escape ghost. When the hunt started, he came at me from the living room towards the front door. I smudged and ran through him to kitchen. I looped him around island until I saw the lights go out. I then headed straight to the exit and about had a heart attack when my in game heartbeat started thumping and I could hear him right behind me. I still managed to escape. Was that just a normal ghost event immediately following a hunt?

Onryo attempts to hunt every 3 flames blow out. This includes candles and your lighter/ignitor.
Any reason for it to not hunt still applies like setup timer, time between hunts, smudge timer, or no one in location.
Crucis can stop this hunt. Other flames will act like a cruci and prevent a hunt, being blown out in process and result in that flame counting towards next attempt.

It's a 'easy' way to test spiritbox if you have a lower tier cuz you know where the ghost is. it has niche use testing during a hunt during certain challenges or if spiritbox is being kinda weird/the ghost room is in a bad spot and it keeps wandering too far away
