Spirit is usually not the hardest to figure out, the main problem makers tend to be Mare or Yurei if the Yurei chooses not to use it's special ability...

Then you'd have to do a double smudge. Smudge again after 2 minute and 30 seconds (Near the ghost) and if it hunts 3 minutes after the first smudge, it's spirit, if it doesn't hunt before after 4 minutes of the first smudge, it's probably not a spirit.

Each ghost type has 3 evidence. If you wanna successfully identify the ghost, the easiest way is to confirm 3 evidences.

If you see it throw something, bring over the EMF reader and see if it hits 5. See it move a door? Bring over your UV and look for handprints.

On my first game the lights went off and I didn't know how to fix that, looking for something to turn them back on, I saw a plate fall, so I just went straight to the van and marked poltergeist, and it was in fact a poltergeist

Nice guess, Polter does throw a lot more than other ghosts.
As for the lights, there's a breaker in each map, and you can see it on the map display in your van. The ghost can turn it off which will disable all the lights in the map.

It is better with friends but still fun solo.
One other thing: The ghost has a favourite room. It wont leave this room often, and because ghosts make the air around them colder, its favourite room will often be significantly colder than the rest of the map. If you can find its favourite room, it's the best place to try and collect evidence.
