For 1.20 I only know Waystones, which I would consider relatively balanced, if you remove the crafting recipe and configure them to be unbreakable. Or you could make the Waystone recipe very expensive.
The only other one I found with a quick search is this:

Oh The Biomes You'll Go is fairly reliable with a reasonable render distance. Doesn't add more than 30 biomes I think. Not sure exactly your limit on "too many" is. One of my favorites though, and it's compatible with most everything.

All the biome mods I know of are a little heavy but most seem to run on my potato so I figured that would be a good suggestion, lol.

Yeah, for a few you would have to ask, a lot of authors have their post requirements/permisions in the description. If you do want to post it, you can always check the description of the mods you have. You might find a lot just ask for credit.

I've made a few dozen custom profiles myself

There isn't a lot that have been updated to 1.20 yet but Enchantment Industry is amazing. Create Ore Excavation is also pretty good, I've used it a little. But that's the only ones I can recommend. I haven't used the Diesel Generators one enough to truly judge it effectively. Create Sifting can be great, but it doesn't have a lot of recipes unless you make them yourself. it's a pretty good "metal" farm though. Cobble-gen + grinder + sifter + smelter can get you all the iron, zinc, or copper you could need. There are a few more I can talk about but you have a paragraph already. Sorry not sorry :p

It's a ressourcepack that changes the color of the nther portal depending on the biome it's in (so you just have to /fillbiome where the portal is to make it change color)

Rebalanced Loot, Not Just Biomes, Reimagined Trims, Ecologics, YUNG’s Structure Mods (you look and chose which ones, they’re all pretty great, especially the stronghold and fortress ones), Towns and Towers (I would significantly lower spawn rates for this though), plus I’ve made a couple mods if you want progression reworks or another tier of lategame gear (Progression/Endgame Reborn). If you’re pregenerating the world I’d try Tectonic, but it is extremely taxing on performance when generating new chunks. Nullscape is great for the end, and you could also look at Terralith for the overworld if you pregen

i would never recommend free hosts. especially with modded. paid, i'd check out Pebblehost and Kinetic Hosting, I've been with them both (currently the latter), and they have good service and performance, and importantly are much cheaper than big hosts like Apex or Bisect. There's also this random guy on the Stardust Labs discord who runs a server host that's insanely cheap... but they don't have a website so it's all arranged by contacting them directly for now

As others have said, free server hosting is usually a bad idea as you get what you pay for (and you pay nothing). I recommend using a payed host. I've used Pebble which worked pretty well, and am currently partnered with Kinetic, who I would also highly recommend (if you want a discount, you could!).

Essential: none. It's much safer and easier to use a dedicated server. Can install one on your own pc even if it can handle it

Optifine: for forge use rubidium and oculus. Rubidium is the performance enhancements, oculus is the shaders. Most shaders are compatible they'll usually say.

As long as the modpack is pretty light, and you only have a few friends, I'd estimate 6-8$ per month. If that's too much, you could also try hosting your own server or using the e4mc mod that Rebel suggested.
