The only super BAD decisions I've seen FFXIV's team make is as punishment for cheaters. For instance, you used to be able to place markers on the ground to help coordinate battles while in the middle of combat. However, ever since The Epic of Alexander (TEA) was released, people were using outside tools to automatically place them during battle, instead of placing them themselves. As such, instead of just revoking their clears of that challenge, they also removed the ability for markers to be placed so long as ANYONE is in combat.

Yeah it's definitely more of a Metroidvania type game instead of a building game. The loop is basically:
Explore > Find items and resources > Get better gear >Find a boss (accidentally or otherwise) >Die to boss inevitably >Prepare better >Summon boss >Kill it >Get loot from boss for BETTER gear >Repeat
And since the game is open-ended to the combat approach, basically anything is viable. Only a few strategies get nerfed hard in harder difficulties (Daedelus Stormbow and Holy Arrows have a MASSIVE nerf against the Destroyer because otherwise they'd rip it in half)
The game even accounted for people being dedicated enough to kill the Dungeon Guardian (which has 10,000HP, 9999 Damage and 9999 Defense)
And all you get is a minion, but hey, bragging rights

the only variety in terraria loop is the dynamite for mining.

Oh there's variety, the bosses can't be defeated in the same manner every time. The skill expected of the player gets ramped up the further you go.
For instance, piercing weapons are EXTREMELY good for worm-like bosses, but basically useless on others
