Just remember, you're only vulnerable if you play on a server with a bad actor (or if the server is said bad actor) and have one of the affected mods.
Dogboy's fix targets all known affected mods.

Hi, I'm part of the large group of mod and pack authors, launcher devs, server hosting networks, and hosting services platforms that worked on research that lead to the serializationisbad utility.

The mods we know that are affected are listed in the README at the bottom of the landing page of the github repository: https://github.com/dogboy21/serializationisbad.

This is a Minecraft application of an old exploit strategy known as Mad Gadget. We have found examples of vulnerable mods as far back as Minecraft 1.4.7 and at least through 1.16, but because of the nature of the problem (unsafe deserialization code in mods themselves) every version is technically vulnerable.

In the interests of getting good information out I'll explain briefly how it works as simply as I can.

Programming languages have a way to turn objects into a different form which is suitable for sending across a network or writing to storage like a hard drive, called "serialization". The reverse process of turning this form back into the original form is called "deserialization".

Mad Gadget leverages known unsafe practices during deserialization to sneak in malicious code using a specialized exploit that isn't rigorously checked during deserialization. The result is an attacker can run arbitrary code on the server, and because the same stuff gets send out to other players, it affects players as well. This is the same level of "uh oh" as Log4Shell a bit ago.

You're only susceptible to it if you play on a server with at least one vulnerable mod and a malicious player joins that server and runs the specially tailored exploit. This is not a virus like fracturiser, but rather an exploitable vulnerability like the unsafe JNDI lookups from Log4Shell.

The way that serializationisbad works is that it patches known unsafe deserialization code in the mods to swap out ObjectInputStream calls to a custom implementation that restricts the kinds of data that can be deserialized, refusing to do so if the payload is suspicious, and logging in that event so that you can see someone is potentially attempting to exploit your server.

It is needed on both servers and clients to protect you from malicious payloads. For Minecraft 1.7+ and Forge mod loader, you can drop it in your mods folder and it works like a minecraft mod. Otherwise (non-Forge or older than 1.7), there are instructions on the repository to use it as a Java security agent instead of a mod.

Each time the server is started or the client is launched, it will check for a more up to date configuration file on the github repository which denotes the currently known vulnerabilities that should be patched.

I would strongly encourage you to use this mitigation tool if any affected mods are in a server you host or play on. Please feel free to report any issues encountered while using it to the bug tracker on our github page and we will rectify them as quickly as possible.

No worries about the ping. All versions are susceptible to this problem because it's not a minecraft or mod loader vulnerability (or even strictly a Java vulnerability), but rather an issue with unsafe deserialization code in specific mods.

We have been reviewing the source for as many mods as we can to determine which ones are affected. We have specific ones found from Minecraft 1.4.7 and ones detected on newer versions like 1.16.

this isn't a virus / malware type of thing. it's a java vulnerability where mods that improperly use a certain java feature brings a security vulnerability - where people connected in multiplayer could push and execute malicious code on other computers connected. If singleplayer or in a private server with known people who aren't going to push exploitive code then there is no issue. If joining public servers or caution is wanted joining private servers there are the mod(s) and patches mentioned in the ⁠📢news article

if you are using modpacks hosted on curseforge as your profiles and have not run them yet - the easiest thing to do is delete what you currently have installed and install them again. that would guarantee any files getting used are current and malware free

as an issue this has existed for ages (like 9+ years), its only come up now because someone exploited it.
additionally, you are only at risk if you join a server with a malicious actor on it, and you have an unpatched mod (there are very few of them left)

How to install mods in the CurseForge app

Click + Create Custom Profile
Name it, select the required Minecraft version, select the modloader & modloader version (usually the highest number), click Create.
Click the profile icon.
Click Add More Content
Search and install the desired mods.
Start the game!

How to install mods that are not on the CurseForge app

Right click the profile picture or Open the profile and click the Icon next to the play button.
Click Open Folder.
Drag the mod(s) into the mods folder. (Note: Some mods will require others, to run. Make sure to read the instructions for the mod!)

Two ways to share a modpack you made with others

:small_blue_diamond: Export and Share - For Friends / Small Groups

Click the Icon for the modpack.
Click the button next to play.
Click Export.
Select the files that should be included.
Send the zip to the people that want it! They can follow the instructions in !mc-installpack to install the pack.

:small_orange_diamond: Upload to Curseforge - For Public Release to Everyone

This option will make your pack public to EVERYONE, it comes with extra requirements and will take some effort to set up.

Go to create a new project
Fill out the information with a proper description of the pack. This should allow anyone to understand what the pack is.
Click the Icon for the modpack in the CurseForge app.
Click the button next to play.
Click Export.
Select the files that should be included.
Open your Project that you made on the CurseForge site and Upload the file you just made.
Wait for Moderation & Sync so it can show up in the client! (See !sync for limitations and !status to learn about the moderation process and how long it will take to approve/decline)

How to install modpacks with the search features

Open the Minecraft section of the app.
Click the top search bar where it says Search for modpacks OR Click the Browse Modpacks Tab.
Find the Modpack you want to install and click install on it.
Wait for the CurseForge app to download and unpack all the required files.
Once finished, click Play!===***

How to install modpacks from an Export (Custom/Private/Site downloaded Modpack zip)

Get the CurseForge app if you don't have it, use !download for a link.
Get the exported modpack from CurseForge or someone else, !mc-packshare explains how to make them.
Open the Minecraft section of the app.
Click Create Custom Profile
Click the Import option.
Find the file you just downloaded in step 2 and select it.
CurseForge app will now attempt to download and unpack the modpack. If it fails, try steps 4-6 again.

The recent stuff affects older mods and another affects 1.20.1 mods (patches were made to the affected mods and other mods for prevention of exploits were made), the malware that we have a command for was taken care of about two months ago now and it only affected mods

hmm alright you appear to be right, im much more use to creating a profile, and adding mods to it from there. in a profile, you can search for mods seperately from modpacks, along with resource packs, so that was my mistake and i apologize

Exports from the cf app are for client use only. You need to copy all the needed files from modpack. Something I recommend to users is to make a local server and get that working first.

Forge mods can be used on forge and not fabric, fabric mods cant be used on forge.

CurseForge is just a hosting site / client manager. The modloaders for mc are what is used in game. CF just makes it easier for users to mod the game.

If a modloader isnt listed on a mod, its likely forge. Forge is the default loader as it came before farbic. Can get a bit confusing but generally the gist of it

I was testing our ArcLight on our server because we are thinking of switching it because of the plugins and mod support

It ran VERY well except for a lower render distance than PaperMC on Aternos has.

So would it be a good idea to use this? I was using Forge 1.19.4 with the Waystones plugin

Render distance is the only issue I really encountered

#

I plan on trying it with all the plugins and mods we will use tomorrow, then I’ll update on how well it runs.

It seems to run well on Aternos which is promising. We will be switching to ArcLight on WitherHosting soon enough

Mods need to either be from the CF site OR in the 3rd party list to be used in public cf packs. Can send zips to your friends manually if you dont want to uplaod to the site
