Shadows are better because of their damage output. Yes they get smacked compared to their counterparts but most shadows damage output is what is their real benefit. For example raids, your main enemy is the timer and so although your mon will die faster, it did 20% more damage which is a huge bonus and a massive benefit in the face of time. I can't speak as much in depth on PvP but I'd assume the bonus damage they do is what makes them more viable. Kind of a kill them before they kill you type mentality with shadows. But again my PvP knowledge is not as extensive as others might be. And know that not all shadows are better than non-shadows. I have found most mons shadows are better and if you really care you'll have to look into it on things like PvPoke.com. Its also incredibly important to know matchups as those are huge for PvP

Shadows are not just a savior answer by any means. Like you can't just assume oh this is a shadow time to win. You still have to know at least the type advantages to make sure that your shadow mons get the most use. A few things for non-hardcore PvP players.

1. Look up relevant pokemon. There is a reason to most of their relevance. Build good teams off the relevant mons based on typing, lead/switch/closers.

2. Know type matchups. You can't bring out a maxed Shadow Mewtwo against a Zarude. The typing just wont do you any good.

Shadows are almost always better in raids. But they are more candy expensive. In PvP there are still lots of cases where shadows are still better than non-shadow. You will just have to know how and when to use them. I think if you find a meta-relevant shadow and build a good team that supports it. You can simply play a bunch of games and learn where it's flaws are and where it excels and you'll slowly get it down. Bottom line. Most times shadows are better than non-shadow but there are cases where this isn't the case. And know how to use the shadow that you want to use.
