Um yes and no. You mentioned the MMD distribution. That is called the content creation promotion scheme.
Major rewards were

1. Top 3 iirc creators in the patch get xtal and cash rewards.
2. Streamers get milestone reward for stream hours.
3. Everyone else also get a share from the participation pool of xtal and cash rewards.
   So if I was a beginner MMD video maker, I might get maybe 100 xtals from my baby attempts.
