Disable proxy when you host. Game desync when proxy get's hiccup then game needs to regenerate where things are, it takes time and more packets to loose on proxy middle point. The more players the higher the lagspike.
If you're hosting you become a knot that connect everyone including enemy, everything including projectiles and particles - all this stuff needs to be processed and it is done on your end. If you can not provide next frame of state of every thing in the game for each of your client - that's lag spike.

For your friends: open up the console and check ping. Console: ctrl+alt+`
command for ping: ping
The game returns: rtt=999
It's the time in ms.
Check it next time you get a lag spike, if it's higher than ususal - that's 100% connection to host issue.

Technical question: If I am running Ror2 on Steam via my PC and steam is on my C drive and Ror2 is installed on D drive (separate partition), could that be causing some of my lag in the game?

**PC Specs: (1770 TI + i7 + 16gb ram)**but still am running into lag in the game with relatively low settings. Multiplayer is basically unplayable. I can lag between .10-1second behind all movements. I have tried most suggestions that YouTube seems to offer to reduce lag in game. Nothing seems to be clear solution.

internet connection is approximately 94.3mbps down -> 20mbps up. USA west cost based player. Internet definitely isn't the best, but it doesn't seem like I should have this much lag.

Any suggestions for performance improvement? 🙂

If you host a multiplayer game you can't lag. Host is always 0 ping.

@wet dawn you can bind whatever key does work with the game and then remap that key for the one that game does not recognise using script.
For example you can set L key for moving forward and then using script remap that key to F7 (L::F7).
With the script you can add functionality of several keys, keystrokes or mouse movement/positioning.
Discord forbids discussing scripts functionality other than simple key rebinds for games. If you need help - send pm.

I'm having the issue again. We used modmanager, neither of us have a VPN, it's all one directory, and I've already done the full deletion before. The only mods I'm using are ones I've used perfectly fine in multiplayer before. If I run the Run Preloader Fix thing it tells me 119 files failed to validate but it doesn't actually do anything.

last time I had a deprecated mod and when I deleted it, I was able to play fine with my other friend after, but I'm still unable to play with this friend specifically even though we've both played fine with other people

Your problem looks to be troublesome, there is no single answer that fixes it in hour.

Likely some complex hardware-software issues that makes ram misbehave.

Even viewer isn't something hard to understand, just list of things your pc written, like captain on a ship - today happened this, at this time. And you can search thru this list, look on right part, there is search feature. Seek critical errors, find the latest and move to that entry, look what happened before that.

Only proven to work every time solution is to change hardware. (If you already went on suggested ones from pins)

@kind bridge post atleast the picture, you're running game on emulator on linux on portable, that's like one step before max incompatibility, install mods and we have absolutely 0 faith that it will run okay.
So be aware no one knows what's wrong in your case, as no one even promised it will even boot up.

@kind bridge it means that they ran the game and it runned, no promise that it would be stable.
I mean devs of the game never intended it to be on steam deck, that's valve made it so.
However valve did not change the game for it to work on deck, instead they made deck to support it. And given how complex the game is, how much cpu and ram load it got i see no surprise it does now behave on your deck well, given that even pc having problems on some players particular machines.

I have no official info about how devs look at deck, they were cheerful and surprised it was tested and verified, but never they fave any promise it will run on let alone linux, and deck.

You might want to ask them yourself.

And about the error. You can record it with phone.
Anyway, not much ppl around here know how deck operates, you better to find some comunity based around deck itself and ask there.

Gotcha thanks for clearing that up. I'll try and get a video of it on my phone. I suspect it has to do with suspending the game as I played a long playthrough without suspending it on the deck and I had no issues

Hello there! I was hoping that there may be some help with an issue that I honestly am lost with trying to solve. I have an issue that someone else has reported for their friend, by the name Dry. I have checked out the solution for the issue, being in pinned 4 and 6, but no matter what I do, the same problem always shows up. I have tried to verify the files, which it always tells me that the files are good and ready. I tried to uninstall the game completely, with the addition of deleting the game file from my folder to make sure it is a fresh copy, yet the same problem persists. I have tried to put in any files possibly missing and followed the instructions clearly, but it didn't seem to work at all. I have tried all the solutions, but it always ends in the same problem. A pop up shows where the game is loading, but as soon as I'd say a third or a fourth of the bar is loaded, the game just stops launching and immediately crashes. Now I could just be following some of the steps wrong and misreading something, but from what I know, I just cannot seem to solve the issue no matter what I tried. I would really appreciate the help, and hopefully solve this issue once and for all so I can play this game that I enjoy quite a lot. Thank you.

Chances are the game loads older settings.

There is a workaround, you may use scripts to force screen resolution, but before that make sure there is only one config.cfg present. Open your player log, search for "config" follow the path where it loaded from, confirm that's the correct one.
Also delete autoconfig file, if it contains resolution settings it gets priority over config. If you have such file it should be next to config.
Also make sure no rule for driver is present about the game, if you set the game to run in certain mode from your nvidia control panel it always get priority.

Likely this will be fixed on next drivers for gpu. Rtx series have a history of misbehaving on unity engine.

Hello, so I just recently purchased risk of rain 2 for my ps4 pro. I really enjoy the game enough to convince my roommates to purchase the games. Now the problem we're having is that I can't play with my roommate that has a ps4 pro. I can only connect and play with my other roommates who have the original ps4. When I try to join my roommate with a ps4 pro it will say I joined the party and then immediately kick me. We're all playing on the same wifi so I am kind of stumped at what the issue could be. This is user driven channel, devs are looking. You able to summon any dev. But better to make proper report on gearbox support page (pinned). This report creates a ticket for devs to work on in working time.
Peope behind HG are very reputable, they never underdelivered, but it's a small team, especially for such a big game.

There is not a bug, but issue that some pc mishandle game related memory. Unknown why exactly, but sometimes it's fixable. Try solutions from pinned messages.
Drop your player.log and error.log from crashfolders. Those files come in pairs each time the game detected crash they are saved in separate folder. Drop 2-3 pairs from last crashfolders. See message below for paths.

@crude wharf important thing: were you client or the host?
Host can't lag, the ping is 0, this can not be the connection.
If you were the client then it almost always a connection issue.
Game is p2p, all interactions are calculated on host's side. If host pc does not compute - every client lags out, but not due to connection, albeit very similarly to.
In case of connection issues check pinned messages for lobby malfunctioning.
Otherwise performance issues usually come due to overheating laptops, drivers or just weak cpu.

@thursty_thurston#3062 not sure what's going on, try unseparating wifi clients. User isolation is security setting that prevents interactions. But the game should work, it throws a connection thru ps services, like steam. You aren't connected thru wifi, you're connected thru internet using same wifi. On pc you can force the game to use whatever network you want, but that requires to open up the ingame console to enter commands.

Try disabling clients isolation on your wifi, thats a security feature that prevents users of same wifi from sharing files and other interactions.
However the game connects not thru wifi, it connects thru some playstation service, you're connected thru internet. On pc you can use commands to force the game to use whatever network you want, but that requires to able to open up ingame console.

This does in fact correlate with crossplay feature.
Try to enable it again by editing registry entry. Run the game, it should load. Then close it and edit registry again to disable crossplay.

@stoic jasper it's very hard to say what's going wrong. Drop more files from more crashes. Does look like gpu malfunction under load. Memory address does not make sense. It is somewhat similar to random crash we seen for some time, but in those logs i see much more difference. Drop more.

Whenever I play eclipse as Captain, I cant progress to stage 2. At all. I can go to newt, but I just get a black screen whenever I try to go to the second stage. It has only been happening since a few days ago, but it makes playing as captain unplayable completely. It workes fine with Railgunner, who is the only other cahracter I tested, but I just get stuck listening to the sounds of stage 1 and looking at a black screen.
Anyone know a fix?

I have the same issue except progressing to stage 3. I just got the game, so I'm only playing with Huntress. I'm playing with 2 friends on pc via steam. I reinstalled the game, updated drivers so I'll see if that helps. I will get the black screen, with sounds until they die then I can see the main menu or squad screen with no issues.

This is likely badly configured nat. But still no harm in checking the ip thingy, it's not dangerous. Those are external ones, more over dynamic, means you get new one each 24hr or reconnect.

(maybe) I'm enjoying the game like hell and got my friends to play it, and they like it (we're three in total) but playing in multiplayer, while stable for most of the run, when we arrive at the stage 5 : both of my friends are having very odd desync, like, I see their character die in the UI, but they still move, and for some reason, they really die. They're like minutes late compared to me (after beating the boss and going to stage 6, one of my friend was still watching me fighting the boss of the 5th stage !.. Then they see me flying for no reason.. ???) Just odd stuff like this, the game is just very laggy for them. And that's pretty sad because the game is f*cking amazing, what can we do to fix this ?

Connection to where?
There is no central server. Whoever hosts becomes the center for all clients, clients are separated from eachother.
Your connection when you host is irrelevant to you, your ping is always 0. You can't lag out on your own lobby.

If you absolutely positive about lags happening only on certain stages and you had corrupted file there might be desync as your game sends altered data to clients, and clients games trying to compensate for desync and miscalculate using wrongful data from you. However this is speculation, I'm not sure if it possibe, many things must align.
Most likely you just didn't noticed. Stage 5 tends to be hectic, there is twice as many enemy around and by the time party gets there they have a bunch of items. This increases load both on cpu and on number of things to send data about to clients. Might overload desync compensation.
In properly configured network (both on host's side and clients) there should be no desync at all.

If you don't want the hassle of configuring just use radmin, it will work for you, but it isn't a fix, just a workaround for you guys specifically.

I already told you if you're missing files then you could provide wrongfull data to your clients, game repairs this data up to a point where on stage 5 there is too much things to track and desync increases, without possibility to be repaired.
Repair intergrity of files. If connection isn't causing that issue radmin just slightly reduce ping for clients.

Ramdin plays the role of steam, provides middlepoint for connection. It incapsulates, encodes and punches thru nat with necessary data for game to connect players. If you guys have stable network it will just replace it, but if the issues indeed comes from poor connection - yes it's gonna fix it

There is some thread about bt affecting loading due to something something and so on. Nothing really useful. So far not many prople reported terrible long loading, what we seen were way under 10min even on slow pc.
The thing you got is surely a problem. Make a proper report to gearbox support. Link in pinned message 2. Devs will receive a ticket to work on.

Hi there, yesterday I was able to play multiplayer just fine, then since last night I have been unable to join multiplayer games, I take a few seconds to load into the character select, and if I host they take a few seconds to load in, and then I press ready and it takes time again to select. By the time the game starts they load in and I'm just spectating. If I validate my files it says 1 file unable to validate and then when I revalidate it says everything is fine. But when opening up the game and trying again it same thing happens and it corrupts file again. Please help

The fact that you connected to someone doesn't mean it fixed. C++ have nothing to do with your issue. It only does in rare cases where c++ gets corrupted in very specific way that prevents the game engine from loading lobby screens. It isn't persistently updated bc there is no such need. Game uses 2015 one.

You need to check your vpn, proxy, firewall, router, isp. Laptops often come with network performance enhancing software that is complete bs, it does only harm to p2p games.

Should be opposite really. That's likely stutters due to memory cleanup from garbage collection. On cable laptops use higher performance, rather than saving power.
One thing that could be going is you're running unlimited fps, your laptop drawing useless frames, creating more garbage so the cleanup becomes visible.
Enable fps counter from steam overlay, see if it indeed capped at 60

I have a problem in any game (including ror2) in which I need to walk forward. After a certain amount of time I could take my hands off the keyboard my character will continue to move forward. After a bit my character will stop moving. A note is that while my guy is walking forward I can't press S to go backwards. He will just stop moving. I'm having some gameplay issues that only happen when Risk of Rain 2 is running. Playing on a Lenovo Legion 5 Laptop, using ethernet port straight from my T-Mobile Home Internet gateway on Windows 11. All drivers are updated, game, steam and mod manager has been uninstalled and reinstalled. Gateway and laptop have been restarted many times as well. As soon as I close ROR2, internet speeds go right back to normal. This has been going on a long time now. No firewall settings have been disturbed, no other programs are present during gameplay and according to the task manager nothing is utilizing my network other than the game. Any ideas what the issue could be?

If I join in mid-game to spectate, one of them (with no specific choice as to who) is stuck floating in mid-air. Everybody else sees them moving and firing etc., and i can see their skill cooldowns and health lower. But they float in mid-air, completely still.

In character selection everything seems to work fine, but no matter who I choose I am immediately put into spectator upon game startup.

When I close "quit to desktop" I get a unity loading bar in a separate window.

I've tried verifying game files, closing and reopening, joining from somebody else, and none have worked so far.

Hello, I've found myself unable to run RoR2 anymore since I changed from a GT 440 (I'm poor.) to an AMD RADEON HD 6750. Game sometimes causes an unity crash after the intro, or directly minimizes itself and doesn't pop up again, there's no overview of the window and it shows no progress whatsoever of loading the game's menu. There's one instance of skipping the intro, getting to the menu, choosing my profile, and from there any option freezes the game.
Specs:
Xeon E5450 4 cores 3.00GHz
8 Ram
AMD Radeon HD 6750 / 6700 Series

The next is a screen of the crash that sometimes shows up, I thought it was that I had to reinstall unity, since the game was first installed when I was using the GT440, so I thought it based on Nvidia drivers, but I don't think it's even installed. Tried a bunch of tips to fix it, run as admin, compat mode, disable fullscreen optimizations, and all my drivers, along with windows, are updated. No idea what I can do. (I've also tried steam methods like checking file integrity, disabling overlays, etc.)

I've also noticed, while people have around 2100-2300~ I have 1800 files, maybe that's the issue and steam is doing weird stuff?

1. there is nothing that prevent you from hosting a game with host 1 command. That's a local host, for lan games. The trick is to have unobstructed bridge from your local network to network of your friend, if you have no p2p problems apart from egs-steam relations you're set to host direct connection already.
2. game doesn't need egs nor steam to function fully-featured. Both eos and steamworks act as bridge to connect players initially, route networking, direct game networking data packets to sync clients on host. Whoever host a game becomes middle point to all clients. If you use direct connection using ip and port of host machine either from external ip (isp provided for all of internet) or local ip (specific for this particular pc whithin your personal network down to your isp) you're able to host to everyone inside those networks. External one needs fully functioning, configured nat. Lan (internal one) just needs to be allowed for the game to be used (you click yes for your windows firewall once you started the game first time ever)
   The link i gave you contains instructions for direct and radmin vpn assisted lan based connection. It will work for you two regardless of egs tomfoolery.

Radmin does additional punch thru for restricted networks. Hamachi doesn't work if connection already isn't perfect.

I have a similar question to this one. My friend and I just bought the game with dlc on pc and the non host always ends up in limbo. They can still move around on their screen but no monsters and no abilities or further progression is possible. The host is able to continue on but can see that the other is no longer in the game.

I had a multiplayer game ongoing last night that I wanted to continue in the morning and now I'm trying to start it back up again (we just stayed in neut's overnight). I got on my pc and realised that I was the only one in the game, and I couldn't be joined. @radiant cedar you can't leave either supervised and not supervised connections live longer than 24hrs. Your internet session always gets disconnected and reconnected. This have nothing to do with the game, steam, your hardware setup or software.
It's how the dynamic internet works.
What you see on your screenshot is the game saying: - there is a p2p (connection peer to peer, host to client) does not receive packets (from client to you) because of lacking the client authorisation (basically client sent handshake "hey it's me, your buddy!" but it was labelled with different id number. Yesterday your buddy, let's say, had id 12 and today it's 43. The game does not operate by username, it looks at id. Nickname can be similar, id is unique.

Therefore nothing went wrong, that's how things are intended to work and it worked like it should.

Although there is no point in continuing long runs (more than few hours on monsoon) because leleving of enemy stops at level 99 and you get bullying everything anyway which is super boring.
You still can use mods like proper save: https://thunderstore.io/package/KingEnderBrine/ProperSave/
to continue ongoing games without holding the game on.

do not send it here, it contains ids and actual names of your pc parts. Like license plates of cars. So you could be tracked and your name could be tied to your pc using this info. Not a huge no no, but still vulnerability. So don't shout publicly your name and where you live - sorta.

press winkey (between ctrl and alt) and R together. In the run windows type in dxdiag enter.
Wait till dxdiag finishes collecting data and save it to a text file with button on bottom right. File will be saved on desktop, hand it over via personal message.

i know, it's pretty common within those few who have performance issues after update. However the update changed nothing internal in the game other than adding more content to load. Which is tested and proven not to have a performance impact in actual gameplay other than there is more procchain and missiles in the air.

You change the render, that handles colors and shines and reflections and so on of surfaces - if surface have no other supported alternate shader or basic inbuild replacement (hence the warnings for surface missing... in the logs) you get default surface color with no effects - pink one!

Well, there is certainly something wrong with how your laptop handles the game.
I have some strings tipped about cpu being throttled for the game for some reason, there is plenty of ways it can be all wrong. But i can not really say if it actually a cpu. Just some previous issues and some clues from your dxdiag. But there is nothing that actually points to a problem in any way. Im not comfortable to suggest you something that i know for sure would work. And those changes are not impacting other software of yours, beside the game itself.

You can run cpu-z to see if your cpu is clocked right, it should be on higher "performance", should be stable and much more loaded while you run ror2. Cpu is known to be a bottleneck for the game.
I doubt your gpu is at fault, especially when you tested the game with different render and feature levels, performance should change if your cpu is at fault. Logs also point that your game picked the correct one (you have 2 onboard, one is low power consumption for general use)
There is like alot of reports about tuning of your laptop's ram and power/frequency tweaking because it supposedly goes all wrong right from the manufacturer. I can't test it and you say the game was working fine so im discluding ram too.
Drivers did not tip me over, looks normal.

Just one thing i really can suggest - try performance power plan. You're currently on (Quality) and i'm not sure it means performance, rather than balanced and econom - those tree are the standard picks your windows lets you choose. On two of them your cpu/gpu is throttled down. Performance one does not restrict your cpu while you run ror2. And inbefore there were cases that laptops did not account for the fact that you trying to run a game and did reduce cpu performance down to the floor so the game culdn't run decently, even at 30fps. Right from the main menu.

You can try to run the game without dlc, i belive you have an option not to install dlc. If you just do not turn dlc ingame that's not gonna work, assets of dlc are loaded even if you have not bought the dlc, you need to opt out not to load it i heard.

Can you drop a record? There is an option to disable boosting, that makes your cpu to be always on higher core speeds, but it's a laptop so it better not be setup like that.
Even if it throttling - something makes it, it's better to figure what and fix it instead. But i have no clue for now.

All of you have the same problem. It's your connection. Game is p2p, it needs to be able send and receive networking packets that sync players together.
You get desync if those packets are delayed, usually if you use vpn or proxy what you see on Nazgul's screenshots happens.
If packets are lost or blocked partially you would see blank lobby (host would see normal lobby, only clients are blank) like on fredprime's screenshot. Game uses steam as a bridge to pass packets, this works most of the time, but route, the chain of different links that pass your packets to one another changes each 24 hr, it might work today, but not tommorow. Reconnecting internet, turning off router helps if on your side network is configured correctly and nothing blocks or interferes with p2p packets. Many software that promise boost in network performance butchers p2p completely, mostly found pre-installed on notebooks.

@orchid flame start with disabling crossplay. Then check that you have no vpn or proxy enabled. Check if your firewall does not block the game packets.
Try to enable upnp in your router see if it helps, if it does disable it and make a custom port forwarding rule some routers need to tie it to the app, ror2 in this case. Rule is simple 7777 to 7777 both tcp and udp (game uses tcp)

@zinc tangle that solves nothing. I already know what the issue is and i already posted what you should check. You need to read what goes by the link and check your and your friends networks.
Starting from disabling crossplay, cheking vpn/proxy, uninstalling bloatware and finally configuring uour local network to allow p2p.

@orchid flame it's the same then. But anyway get #roles to post files. See message above from autosupport, follow the path to output.log and post me the player.log from same location. Make sure before doing that you started the game, tried to connect to your friend and closed the game. This way the log would be complete with the error or pointers to it.

yo, having some issues running ror2 on windows 11. Got a new pc recently, came with a free antivirus package for MacAfee. game crashed on startup, which I knew was an issue because it happened on my last pc too. Followed the same steps i did before, turned off my antivirus while i let the game download off of steam, it ran fine after that. Then, my subscription for MacAfee expired. I switched programs, and now I'm running into the same issue again, but turning off the antivirus temporarily and reinstalling doesn't fix it. on top of that, the crash handler won't even launch now, so im not even sure what the issue is. I tried finding solutions, but all of them boiled down to a) update your graphics drivers and b) the reinstallation instructions i already tried

Hey everyone!
I've been having issues with risk of rain 2 for quite a while.
The last time I was actually able to play the game was back before the void dlc, not sure the issue is related.
When i tried to open the game, sometimes i got to an actual game, but it was extremely laggy, and then a unity crash came up, other times I didn't even get to start a run before crashing.
I reinstalled my windows 10 recently, and tried again.
Gpu driver updated, no AntiVirus is running, game files' integrity verified.
I can start up the game but once in, the screen turns black after a couple seconds, I can still hear the music but nothin happens, doesn't crash, just freezes (waited a long time to see of it'll continue or not). Tried reinstalling, same results.
I was able to play back before the dlc, so i don't think it's a hardware issue (setup is the same since).
Tried disabling the dlc, didn't help either.
Unity crash doesn't appear anymore but maybe only because I don't even get to start a run anymore.
Does anyone have any ideas? I ran out, and couldn't find much more online either :/

That question have no relevance on your situation. Game have no central server it's p2p. It's entirely your connection. Make sure vpns/proxy are disabled. Check delays on sites that show your ping, speedtest by ookla for example.
Make sure no firewall is blocking the game networking on your pc.
Open 7777 port in your router. Try to enable upnp.
When you do comnect to host ask where he's from, long distance inevitably lead to delay.
Long delays usually caused by nat restricted connection or relayed connection (like vpn)
You can open the game console by simultaneously pressing ctrl + alt + ' in that order one by one.
Ping command returns rtt=999 where the number is the time in ms to get a response from host.

Hey guys, I've been getting unity crashes ever since I started playing the game back in April 2019 and nothing has worked to fix it. I've asked here before and never got a proper response. I've been told it was my GPU and that's been replaced and I still crash. I've been told the next update will fix it and that has never happened, even with the official release. Current problem with the game - it does not run from your dedicated gpu. It was not able to detect what gpu you have and resorted to use cpu integrated one with using of software emulation. This is exceptionally slow and indeed results in slow framerate. No surprise you get below 10fps, it's actually quite impressive performance from your cpu right there.

5th stage have more credits to spawn enemy and at that point everyone have lots of items that also increase the network load.
Game can compensate errors up to a point. And then there is no way to fix player states and sync every client to host.
If your host uses vpn - that common issue to have.
Host connect everything and everyone. If his connection is faulty everyone but him desynced.
There is some workarounds pinned here.

um, i think i have like a PS4 controller dongle plugged in which might be using bluetooth, otherwise my computer itself is BT compatible but none of my peripherals im using are bluetooth or anything.

There is no evidence that bt actually have effect, but some rumors say that bt devices especially controllers somehow affect load time on unity engine games sometimes.
I have no idea how, but it seems like it. Many ppl who have huge load time have used some kind of bt controller.
And in the same time, like incomparable more people have 0 issue with it.

@glossy halo there is no central server. The game is p2p. Whoever host becomes the server.
Check that no one uses vpn. Forward 7777 port.
Try upnp.

No one uses VPN, nothing has changed since. Both computers are next to each other, connected to same WiFi network

@polar hazel vpn is just one of common things that reduce connection stability.
Try to open 7777 port, use upnp. Allow the game in firewalls. Turn off network protection if your antivirus does that.
