Not big on Fortnite, but I'll play it with others. It's funny how it's this popular kids' game that is "cool" for older people to hate on... and yet, my experience with 90s "Boomer" shooters helps me win matches in Fortnite.

At my age, I can quite safely say that Fortnite is aimed below my age. But realistically, it is aimed at kids and teens.

With M-rated games, it's hard to tell which ones are aimed at older adults. I play Starfield, which bores a lot of young people. The four companions you can get are in their 30s and 40s. It's not overly violent, but it's not aimed at kids or teens. There's nothing too exciting about exploring star systems, and for shooting, there are more "fun" games for kids.

I also consider Baldur's Gate III for older folks, because it's a slower-paced (turn-based) game based on D&D, which really hasn't been popular since I was a kid (though the recent D&D movie, Honor Among Thieves, did well with all ages).

Then there are games that are based on older games, or older game mechanics. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night seems to be aimed at ages teen and up, but its "Metroidvania" gameplay is aimed at people who have been gaming since the NES (Metroid and Castlevania II being the basis for the genre). Younger gamers can enjoy newer (and older) Metroidvanias, but many don't have the patience for the exploration aspect that is key to the style. Then there are roguelikes, with procedurally generated gameplay (yes, even in the 1980s!) and slow progression based on learning how the game world works. What you would call "gameplay tips" for newer games are considered "spoilers" in roguelikes. A classic example being Hack (now called NetHack) and a modern one being Noita.

I'm not keeping a gate here; anyone can enjoy any game, and it goes both ways in the age thing, but I do feel (and am thankful) that some games are aimed at old-school gamers, and some are aimed at younger gamers.
