I don't think it's awful, it's just simple and some people prefer more colorful, unique icons. Of the 2022 Christmas icons, my personal favorites are Cookie Cursed and Gunner because they're definitely more unique. MM, Med, and BB were just recolors and fell flat compared to the other two.

The 2023 ones have a similar trend. Split, Jelly, and Bully seem to be the most disliked (same for me) because they're too simple, whereas Paci, BR, and Witch are beautifully done. GL and LM are mid at best.
