Howdy, newish player here, only on R2 and have been experimenting with lots of different loadouts but still haven't found any guns that really stick for me. Are there any simple ways to test out guns other than loading into a mission with that loadout, anything like an armory or training?

there is no expedition you can drop into and swap guns without leaving to lobby and having to drop again

Going back to this, going for kill is usually good, the main situation where u prioritize stagger is depending on weapon and/or if u have multiple sleepers on you and cant dodge (for example Hel shotgun and hel autopistol are both weapons built for staggering alot of enemies at once), but otherwise going for kill is usually optimal, just dont underestimate the value of stagger it can save ur life in a pinch :D

currently strat seems to be to wake 1st room as late as possible but i think that might be the opposite of what's optimal
waking immediately makes all the enemies run towards you (front of room) and then when you path behind pillars at right you run past them and have cover anyways
pulling early just means there are no enemies up top when you approach door

There is a fog turbine in the very first zone, in addition there should be fog repellers around the map, I recommend you normally move with the turbine and try to primarily save fog repellers for the alarms.

Also note that if you hold Q you can tell the bots to do stuff and that includes throwing fog repellers if they picked up any (they will try to throw where you are looking but their throwing can be a bit wack sometimes) If a room is 2 packed in the fog u can always shoot to alert the room and then go back up to a non infectious place and deal with the room there.

I believe that the room where you pick up the thingy has a disinfection station, so I wouldn’t worry too much about infection

I do the class 3 first and the fog repellers help but I find that in the time it takes for them to activate during alarms sleepers catch up super fast
