thralls ignore target def, but not damage reduction/immunity. so if it's something like Olm then you have to use the correct thrall type (because each part of him takes reduced damage from incorrect attack style)

assuming there is no damage reduction to consider, melee thrall has the inherent drawback of having to be in melee range of its target, so it might lose time that way

mage thrall has a faster projectile than range thrall, not really relevant for the most part but why not just use it if they're all the same besides
